TIFF '11 Review: 'Machine Gun Preacher' Is Essentially A Botched 'Rambo'

In 2008’s blitzkrieg actioner “Rambo,” writer-director Sylvester Stallone recognized the real-life struggles of the people of Myanmar, dramatizing the struggle in a blood-drenched exploitation film that, despite its inelegance, emboldened the people of that region while lionizing a fictional hero of guerilla warfare. The problem with “Machine Gun Preacher,” Marc Forster’s third world drama about a real-life would-be savior who ventured into the Sudan and attempted to build an orphanage with sheer will and a smidgen of gunpower, is that it’s afraid to be “Rambo.”

The Hollywood Reporter is, er, reporting that serially underrated actors Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan will star in a thriller entitled "Penthouse North," to be directed by Joseph Ruben. It was announced at the Toronto International Film Festival and will start shooting in Canada's capital of Ottawa this November.

Considering his run of recent performances... actually, let's strike that and start again. Considering almost every performance he's ever given, ever, perhaps bar a decent vocal turn in "How To Train Your Dragon," the idea of Gerard Butler as a potential Oscar nominee is a bizarre one: this is, after all, the man who, in films like "Law Abiding Citizen," "The Ugly Truth" and "The Bounty Hunter" has give some of the most wretched bits of acting in recent memory, and whose signature role is still King Shouty in "300." But before the just-starting-to-gear-up awards season kicks off, it's something that we could possibly end up seeing.

But the actor, who for some time had languished in DTV hell, is certainly on the up, with roles in Tarsem's "Immortals" and the Emile Hirsch indie "The Motel Life" on the way, and it seems to have legitimized the actor as a leading man in the independent world again.

Essentially it's like "Groundhog's Day" only set within the framework a sci-fi thriller. In the film (and all of this is taken from the official Apple trailer synopsis, so do not cry spoilers, please) decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man and he discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

When Duncan Jones' mysterious debut feature "Moon" was released back in 2009, the Internet collectively collapsed under the weight of its own enthusiasm. Jones was heralded as a bold new visionary, someone to rescue the tired sci-fi genre from the Hollywood trappings of big-budget spectacle. And while the heaps of praise lavished on the young filmmaker and his debut film were somewhat hyperbolic, it was still clear that the dude was a fresh voice in the field and one unafraid to focus on the human elements of science fiction and genre.
