Whiplash
A movie about jazz drumming doesn't immediately sell itself as the most dazzlingly engaging prospect. However, writer/director Damien Chazelle has put together something truly exciting with "Whiplash," which created a buzz at Sundance, continued the noise at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and is now heading to the Toronto International Film Festival where it will likely continue the beat of strong praise from critics.

Emma Watson Miles Teller
When Damien Chazelle emerged in 2009 with the lo-fi musical "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," he made it clear that music was going to be crucial to his narratives. This year's "Whiplash," chronicling the trials of a talented drummer, is set against the backdrop of the jazz world, and it has been a smash success. Premiering at Sundance to great acclaim, and continuing the buzz at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, it has been Chazelle's breakout movie. So perhaps it's no surprise he's sticking with the general themes of young people, grand ambitions and bringing along Miles Teller once again.

Whiplash
While drummers are often the butt of the joke, the truth is they are lynchpins to any musical group. They are crucial for keeping everybody in time, establishing the feel of the song and ensuring no one goes off course. And those responsibilities are taken to dramatic heights in the upcoming drama "Whiplash."

Divergent
"She really did stand on that ledge," director Neil Burger marveled to EW months ago about one of the main set-piece stunts in the upcoming YA dystopian sci-fi film, “Divergent” featuring his up-and-coming lead Shailene Woodley. "She's incredibly game and so adventurous. In a way, she's very Dauntless" (that’s code for the faction of people in this world that are brave).

Divergent
The cornerstone of young adult fiction is its exploration of personal, emotional issues through the filter of ridiculously high stakes, not the least of which because teenagers equate their feelings with the center of the universe. But when film adaptations of that material build real universes to physically embody those issues, the results are decidedly mixed, exemplified by Neil Burger’s realization of “Divergent.”

No, Viggo Mortensen isn't starring in some new Marvel movie, despite the name of the developing drama "Captain Fantastic." Instead, the actor will be joining "28 Hotel Rooms" director Matt Ross' film about "an idealistic father who, after a decade of living off the grid in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, must return with his six young kids to assimilate back into society."

Fantastic Four Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara & Jamie Bell
Poor Josh Trank has had to answer a sea of rumors in putting together his vision for "The Fantastic Four." The scrutiny is understandable: this is a property that has been adapted into film twice already (three times if you count a basically-unreleased early '90s incarnation), each time failing to impress the hardcore fans. And Fox, eager to kick-start the series to keep it from reverting back to Marvel, have been keeping things close to the vest, refusing to disclose any story details for a film that’s a little over a year away, and about to begin production. But if this latest casting notice is anything to go by, Fox is playing fast and loose with the series. And why not?

Although the trades are being cautious and using phrases like "seems that way" while underscoring some deals aren't in place, Josh Trank hasn't hit Twitter yet to debunk this latest news, and most places seem pretty confident that casting on "Fantastic Four" has finally been locked down. And it looks like the reboot of the superhero quartet are bringing some rising young faces to the roles.
