Following our looks at actors, actresses, screenwriters and directors to watch in recent months, when the time came to put together a list of cinematographers (as we did two years ago), we went in with an open mind. But what was interesting is realizing, after the fact, that in an era where 35mm film is allegedly being phased out, that all five have done perhaps their most distinctive work on old-fashioned celluloid, rather than digital.

What a weekend for female-oriented action movies! It's almost like Steven Soderbergh requested "Haywire" be released the same weekend as "Underworld: Awakening," the latest entry in the dum-dum vampire franchise. You know, as a commentary on the female action hero. Regardless, there's gonna be a whole lotta ass-kicking ladies at the multiplex this weekend. Everyone wins! Aside from Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" over a decade ago, there haven't been a lot of decent movies focusing on the drug trade just over the border. Sure, the cartels crop up from time to time, but mostly in villains in dumb action movies, and it feels like quite a while since we've had a really smart, incisive look at that terrifying world.

If you've had your ear to the ground over the past few months you'd know that one film building a considerable amount of very well-deserved buzz is Gerardo Naranjo's "Miss Bala." Premiering this spring at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, the film wowed critics and audiences alike and has been gaining traction ever since. It was a hot ticket at TIFF just a week or so back, and it will certainly be one of the hottest titles at NYFF when it kicks off next week, particularly since Mexico has just selected the film as their Oscar entry for this year.

Telluride is long departed, things are winding down in Venice (we're here for another 24 hours, but it's starting to look like a ghost town), and The Playlist team head off to Toronto this afternoon. But there's plenty more on the way in the months to come. Only this morning, AFI Fest revealed that it would open with the premiere of Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," and shortly afterwards, the full line-up for the 55th BFI London Film Festival has been announced.

Cannes can be both boon and burden to filmmakers. A positive reception can see your career move forward in leaps and bounds, while a thumbs down from the critical Croisette faithful can serve as a major setback. For new rising filmmakers, the risk is even greater but for Mexican helmer Gerardo Naranjo his first visit to France will be a memorable one.

Film festivals are a great place to see films from around the world, and are sometimes the only opportunity to catch certain movies, since, due to the vagaries of film distribution, some pictures never get off the festival circuit or get released outside of their native country. However, this isn't one of those stories, as two terrific thrillers that premiered at Cannes earlier this year will be making their way to theaters in the U.S.

Impressive Main Slate Includes 'The Artist,' 'Shame,' 'Le Havre,' 'Melancholia,' 'Miss Bala,' 'The Kid With The Bike' & MoreWith TIFF and Venice solidifying their lineups, organizers at the New York Film Festival revealed their full main slate today and it's pretty impressive. Kicking things off, the fest announced that Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" has landed the Closing Night Gala slot. To refresh your memory, the film is co-written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and follows the story of a wealthy Hawaiian man named Matt King (Clooney), who takes his daughters (Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller) on a road trip to find the man his wife has been having an affair with after a boating accident leaves her critically injured. Beau Bridges, Matthew Lillard, Judy Greer, Robert Forster, Mary Birdsong and Nick Krause all co-star in the film which Payne has described as, “a drama with a light touch. Or it aspires to have a light touch.” The film will hit theaters on November 23rd.
