Alec Baldwin Elizabethtown
If you wondering why studios still spend hundreds of million of dollars on Tom Cruise projects, there's a simple reason — he's still a massive international star. While "Edge Of Tomorrow" didn't even crack $100 million stateside, overseas it hauled in $248 million. So if you're wondering if Paramount is hesitating on pulling the trigger on "Mission: Impossible 5," the answer is "no."

Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Philip Seymour Hoffman
There's television and then there's "Louie." Comedian Louis C.K. has brought an auteur approach to his show, one that has consistently challenged the traditional notions of thirty-minute television, and a program that has seen him bring in a wealth of guest stars, not always playing cameos, but carefully selected for their contributions. From David Lynch to Bob Saget to Chloe Sevigny, C.K. has kept audiences on their toes, but there's one guest spot we'll sadly never get to see.

Zero Dark Thirty Jessica Chastain
So, let's start with the caveats. This is a rumor, and it's coming from the folks at Schmoes Know, who in the last little while have been okay with their track record concerning this kind of stuff. That said, this could still totally be off base and wrong, but it's intriguing enough to consider.

Even though he's been playing it cagey and cool, this news is hardly shocking. As far back as last fall, prior to the release of "Jack Reacher," Christopher McQuarrie was expected to write and direct "Mission: Impossible 5" for his bud Tom Cruise. Even earlier this year he was undecided on directing and attached himself to some other projects along the way, including Warner Bros. long developing remake of "Ice Station Zebra" and a U.S. adaptation of the U.K. miniseries, "Unforgiven." But it looks like he's accepting the mission.

This is probably not how Warner Bros. wanted to head into the Memorial Day weekend. With the studio seemingly to finally get their long developing "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." movie going, with Guy Ritchie attached to direct and Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander coming in supporting roles, they've just lost their leading man.

Want to know the secret to becoming Hollywood's hottest screenwriter? It turns out all you have to do is write a British superhero sitcom that no one watches. At least that's how U.K. scribe Drew Pearce broke through; he was behind the excellent but little-seen ITV2 show "No Heroics" a few years back, and now he's seemingly writing every blockbuster in theaters.

Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
While the varying results of "Rock Of Ages," "Jack Reacher" and "Oblivion" may suggest that Tom Cruise isn't always a guaranteed box office draw, at least within the franchise of "Mission: Impossible" he's unstoppable. "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" was the highest grossing of the bunch, reaching nearly $700 million worldwide, almost $150 million more than the next most successful effort, "Mission: Impossible II." Naturally, Paramount didn't waste any time in putting a sequel into development, and while that was over a year ago, the project is now beginning to come back to life.

Christopher McQuarrie Still Undecided On Whether He Should Direct 'Mission: Impossible 5'; Should He Be?

It's probably safe to say that "Jack Reacher" didn't quite do the business that Paramount was hoping for. After Tom Cruise took "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" to nearly $700 million worldwide, we can't blame anyone for thinknig that the actor had rebounded from bad publicity and middling efforts like "Knight & Day." So he was put in the lead of "Jack Reacher," a potential franchise starter that will likely wind up with nearly $200 million worldwide. Profitable for sure, but with Asian audiences essentially deciding if the series lives or dies, it's not the outing everyone involved was hoping for. Which brings us to Christopher McQuarrie...

Happy New Year, J.J. Abrams! As January winds to a close, the events of the past week have basically suggested that Abrams is essentially the new Steven Spielberg. Last night, Disney officially confirmed the news that J.J. Abrams has signed on to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7" (see press release below). But of course the big question is what becomes of Abrams' relationship with Paramount?
