Mommy
One of the films we named as The Best Of The 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and a picture that's "vibrant, intoxicating, illuminating," to say that Xavier Dolan's "Mommy" floored us would be an understatement. And while the film is still bafflingly without U.S. distribution, it's gearing up for release in Canada and the first trailer is here.

Best/Worst Cannes
Our suitcases are only partially unpacked and our accreditation badges are still rattling around the bottom of our bags, but this year's Cannes is now well and truly over, and perhaps the only way for us to attain true closure, is to run through our highlights and lowlights.

Cannes Film Festival Poster
Roll up the Red Carpet; hang up your tux; let down your chignon; the Cannes Film Festival drew to a typically glamorous close this evening with the glitzy award ceremony, at which Jury president Jane Campion and her unprecedentedly female-majority panel announced their award decisions. The big news? Long-time bookie’s favorite "Winter Sleep” taking the coveted Palme d'Or, much to Playlister Jessica Kiang’s dismay and Playlister Nikola Grozdanovich’s joy (check out Jess’ review and Nik’s rebuttal)

Mommy
We remember watching a directors' roundtable one day and the question was asked of the assembled filmmakers "what is the hardest part of directing?" They all agreed that the hardest thing was to create a sense of life: inside a frame in which everything included therein is a choice, the hardest thing is to make it feel part of the world, unmanufactured, organic, alive. They should maybe just hang around mopping up the spillover from "Mommy," the tremendous new film from Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan, because, by some distance his best film, it is also one of the most vibrant, intoxicating, illuminating films of this or any Cannes, and it's a little like we can still feel it thrumming through our veins.

Lost River, Ryan Gosling
The 2014 Cannes Film Festival lineup is here, so now we can spend the next month trying to get as much intel on the movies as possible before they screen for critics and cinephiles on the Croisette. And of course, that means lots of images are here, so let's dive into three playing in Competition.

"We had envisioned – like any filmmaker who dreams of going to Cannes – of being in competition and winning the Palme d’Or,” Xavier Dolan had said in 2012, when his third film "Laurence Anyways" (and third on the Croisette) landed a slot in the Un Certain Regard section, not in coveted Competition lineup. He then took his next film, "Tom At The Farm," to the Venice Film Festival, skipping Cannes entirely. But could 2014 finally see the young filmmaker land in Competition at Cannes.

While you can debate the talent of rising young filmmaker Xavier Dolan, you can't question the work ethic. At 24 years old, the director has completed four feature films, premiering three at Cannes, and one at Venice. And with his latest "Tom At The Farm" still doing the festival rounds, screening shortly at Montreal's Festival Du Nouveau Cinema, Dolan isn't taking a moment to rest, as he's already starting his next venture.
