Ever since it was unveiled back in 2010, there's been talk of a possible sequel to "Monsters." And that's hardly a surprise: while Gareth Edwards' film wasn't a giant success, it made a very decent $5 million worldwide (plus much more on home video formats), which is an unqualified success for a film made on a miniscule budget.

Gareth Edwards’ 2010 film “Monsters” was the sort of sci-fi film you don’t see every day, and the critical reaction was appropriately positive. While many focused on the fact that Edwards was able to not break the bank creating fully realized worlds and creatures literally on his own computer, the film was also a pretty engaging story, featuring a standout performance by actor Scoot McNairy. Edwards has since moved on too MUCH bigger fare with the Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures-produced “Godzilla” reboot, but he’s also carved out time to get another smaller independent film that’s akin to a “robot 'Star Wars' ” titled “Forever.” However, interest in his debut “Monsters” still resides, with news first hitting around the middle of 2011 that a sequel was in the works, and an announcement arriving earlier this month that the newly coined "Monsters: The Dark Continent" would be heading our way soon.

One of the big successes of the 2010 indie world was "Monsters," the ultra-low budget sci-fi picture which became a sensation after it premiered at SXSW. Made on a miniscule budget, with hugely impressive effects created on an off-the-shelf computer, it followed two Americans trying to travel across an area of Central America devestated by huge alien creatures. It was an off-beat, original take on the genre, and marked the arrival of some major new talents -- and indeed, helmer Gareth Edwards was picked out to direct a new reboot of "Godzilla," which remains in development, while star Scoot McNairy has gone on to major roles in "Killing Them Softly," "Argo" and "Twelve Years A Slave."
