When Disney and Pixar announced that they were attempting a "Monsters Inc." prequel that would show us what our beloved heroes Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) were like in college, it was hard to muster much enthusiasm. After all, much of the charm of the first film lay in the fact that it was a workplace comedy, and the workers just happened to be monsters who scared human children for a living. Seeing them in college not only seemed regressive but, if it didn't succeed, could sully (ha) the sweetness of the original. But little by little as we've seen more and more of "Monsters University," the more excited we've become. With a release of the final trailer, our excitement has been solidified. This looks scary good.

Someone raised an interesting but kind of depressing point about Pixar recently. Between 1995 and 2009, the peerless animation company produced ten movies, with just one of those being sequel – 1999’s “Toy Story 2.” If all goes as expected, between 2010 and 2015 four of the company’s seven features will have been sequels, the third of which, “Monsters University” (a prequel, technically, but you catch our drift) is set for release in just over two months time.

Many Pixar heads would probably like to fast forward right through 2013 and get to 2014 already. Just as the New Year rang in yesterday, the beloved animation studio dropped a preview of their exciting slate from 2014 onward, which includes "The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind," "The Untitled Pixar Movie About The Día de los Muertos" and "The Good Dinosaur." But before we get there, there will be one more spin around the block for some familiar characters.

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for animated features, with three original animated films from DreamWorks Animation: the hotly anticipated sequels to the wonderful "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and slightly-less-wonderful "Despicable Me," and a new film from "Ice Age" mastermind Chris Wedge. Over the past couple of days, too, we've gotten brand new images from arguably the most exciting projects of next year – Pixar's college-set prequel "Monsters University;" Disney's newest princess endeavor "Frozen," and a pair of Studio Ghibli movies by their cofounders – Isao Takahata's "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" and Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises."

While it seems that Pixar’s unimpeachable run ended with 2011’s “Cars 2,” we’re remaining cautiously optimistic about the studio’s first foray into prequel territory with “Monsters University.” Despite hitting theaters in a little over six months, some details have leaked that are sure to make metal fans excited about the return to Sulley and Mike Wazowski.

The 3D-ization train rolls on! After last year's 3D re-release of "The Lion King," initially a limited engagement gimmick meant to promote the Blu-ray release, brought in almost $100 million for the Mouse House, the floodgates opened. This month sees the release of a 3D version of Pixar's aquatic fable "Finding Nemo," (which we saw yesterday, and admit was pretty cool). And come December, "Monsters Inc." will be reissued in a newly stereoscopic format, the poster and trailer for which have just arrived.
