After 6-9 months of fevered speculation and prognostication, the 2012/2013 awards season climaxed on Sunday night with the 85th Academy Awards, as Ben Affleck's "Argo" took Best Picture, Ang Lee won his second Best Director Oscar, Daniel Day-Lewis became the first person to win three Best Actor awards, Christoph Waltz took his second Supporting trophy in four years, and Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence won their first awards.

Well, duh. A WWII story with a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Matt Damon Hugh Bonneville, and Bob Balaban, George Clooney's "Monuments Men" (which he'll also take a role in) is now slated for a "Hey-pay-attention-to-me-awards-season" date of December 20, 2013.

They had fun at the multiplex with the 'Ocean's' trilogy of movies, made a topical movie together with "Syriana," Damon popped his head into Clooney's directorial debut "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," and Clooney produced Steven Soderbergh's excellent and underrated "The Informant!" starring Damon. And now, the helmer is re-upping Damon for what will hopefully be a substantial role in his next effort behind the camera, which has all the makings for a big piece of Oscar cheese.

After a busy few years (six movies in three years, from "Up in the Air" to "The Descendants"), George Clooney's been taking things a little easier in 2012. That's not to say that he hasn't been busy: the actor wrapped Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," and is a producer on Ben Affleck's "Argo," a role which is all but certain to see him pick up an Oscar nomination in a record-breaking sixth different category (having previously got nods in Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay). But with the former being delayed from its original berth in November to an unknown date next year, 2012 marks the first calendar year since Clooney's ascension to stardom in the early 90s that the actor hasn't appeared in a film in theaters.

First, 20th Century Fox has come onboard George Clooney’s “The Monuments Men,” which the multi-hyphenate is set to write, direct, and star in. We’ve been hearing about this project for a while now, but due to financial constraints, Sony Pictures has had to call for a little help from Fox to back the picture. Set in World War II, the film involves a plot to protect stolen art from destruction at the hands of Nazis. Cate Blanchett is attached as the female lead, with Bill Murray apparently circling a role as well. Yeah, that’s a great cast, but none of them are exactly box office guarantees with material like this outside of Clooney – and thankfully he likes to pick edgier adult fare akin to this for his mainstream endeavors. The deal will see Fox co-finance the picture with Sony and distribute internationally. [THR]

While George Clooney has more than few options for his next directorial outing, it seems "The Monuments Men" is picking up steam. First announced at the beginning of the year, the movie sounds like -- as one writer of the site said: "The Train" meets "Inglourious Basterds" but as directed by Clooney and therefore potentially awesome. Now toss in a potential cast that includes Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett and Paul Giamatti? Yeah, we'd be all over that.

Even though "The Ides Of March" is on the awards season comeback trail, it didn't make the initial waves we anticipated. Another strong directorial effort from George Clooney after the misstep that was "Leatherheads," the return to form looks to have revitalized the filmmaking bug in Clooney, as the actor/director is now attached to co-write, direct and star in an adaptation of WWII-set heist film "The Monuments Men."
