While recent efforts like the documentary "The Thorn In The Heart," the superhero blockbuster "The Green Hornet," and indie "The We And The I" have all allowed Michel Gondry to take some detours, it's been a while since we've seen a movie that's, well, Gondry-esque. But it looks like the filmmaker is firmly back in his wheelhouse with "Mood Indigo," which debuted a gorgeous trailer about a month ago. And with its spring release overseas gearing up, some fresh promo material has arrived.

While he was responsible for one of the best films of the '00s with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," it's been a while since we really fell for something by Michel Gondry. Follow-up "The Science Of Sleep" had its charms, as did documentary "The Thorn In The Heart," but his major films like "Be Kind Rewind," "The Green Hornet" and "The We & the I" have swung between being cripplingly uneven and borderline unwatchable.

Have Michel Gondry's still-in-production movies always been this heavily covered by the press? Either way, after the relative secrecy behind the making of "The We And The I" which premiered at Cannes Directors' Fortnight earlier this year, the filmmaker and everyone else behind "Mood Indigo" have been happy to let press descend upon Gondry's latest film. We've already seen a batch of official stills drop and now we've got one more look at the film's leads, Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris.

It has been a while since Michel Gondry fans got a film from the director that was, well, Michel Gondry-esque. His last three features have been a documentary ("The Thorn In The Heart"), a mainstream superhero flick ("Green Hornet") and a lo-fi indie ("The We And The I"), the latter two of which found his whimsical flourishes mostly pushed to the sidelines. But as the plethora of set pics from his latest endeavor "Mood Indigo" have revealed, this will be full on Gondry with strange props galore, and now the first official images from the movie give an even closer look at the oddball world he's creating.

After dipping his toes in studio waters for "The Green Hornet," Michel Gondry is headed to Cannes to unveil his much more lo-fi/indie "The We & The I," a mysterious project that will follow a group of high school kids on the bus home on the last day of school. But the ever-busy helmer is also in the midst of shooting his next effort, "Mood Indigo, " which -- if the set photos are anything to go by -- will see Gondry firmly in his unique and creative wheelhouse.

Michel Gondry's "Mood Indigo" certainly isn't lacking in eccentricity. The film, which is now rolling in front of cameras, is based on Boris Vian's 1947 novel, "L'Ecume des jours," and tells the tale of Colin (Romain Duris), the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument, the pianocktail. He marries Chloe (Audrey Tautou), but unfortunately, she falls ill during their honeymoon thanks to a water lily that enters her lung, and the only way to treat the ailment is to surround her with fresh flowers -- and the expense soon drains his funds. Like we said, it's not the kind of logline you read every day. But of course, Gondry is kicking things up a notch.

When we caught up with French actress Léa Seydoux at the Berlin Film Festival, we asked about her about Michel Gondry's upcoming "The Foam Of The Days" (also recently called "Mood Indigo") which she had been linked to at the beginning of the year. "The thing is, that I don't really know yet [about that]...I have another project..." she teased, without saying much more. But indeed, it appears that scheduling has forced her out of the film.
