It just over two weeks the verdict will be in for Wes Anderson's Cannes Film Festival opener "Moonrise Kingdom" and the fact that it's the director's first period film (taking place in the '60s) isn't the only major change fans can expect.

Despite the occasional film like "John Carter," the major studios are having a pretty good time of it in 2012. The box office is up all over, and films like "The Hunger Games," "21 Jump Street" and "The Avengers" have performed above expectations with both critics and audiences. There's plenty more to come in the summer, as we discussed yesterday in our blockbuster preview, but what of films of the non-explode-y variety in the warmer months?

There is something about being back in the distinct world of a filmmaker that can be both comforting and exciting. And while Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" marks his first period picture and first live action movie since 2007's "The Darjeeling Limited" everything we've seen thus points to the tone and aesthetic we've always admired from the filmmaker.

This morning came the unveiling of the lineup at the Cannes Film Festival and among the surprises is the news that Wes Anderson's festival opener "Moonrise Kingdom" is also going to be playing In Competition as well -- the first time that's happened since Fernando Meirelles' "Blindness" in 2008. Will it have the juice to make it all the way to a Palme d'Or? The competition is fierce and we doubt it will happen, but at the very least, the film looks to have Anderson firing on all cylinders.

Early this morning brought one of the most anticipated moments in the cinephile's calendar: the announcement of the line-up of this year's installment of the Cannes Film Festival. And while it reads in places like a parody of a Cannes line-up (Alain Resnais! Abbas Kiarostami! Michael Haneke! Ken Loach!) there's no doubt that we're excited about all of those films, as well as new ones from David Cronenberg, Jacques Audiard and many, many others.

Usually we associate motion posters with a marketing campaign geared towards a blockbuster, not a sweet, low-key, auteur-driven indie. But if Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" marks his first period picture, then perhaps it's only fitting that he's changing his game up on the marketing end as well, with character-driven motion posters dropping on a variety of sites for the film.

We've deconstructed the trailer, explored the influences on the film as revealed yesterday by Wes Anderson and generally been a bit impatient for his latest, "Moonrise Kingdom," but this batch of new images should hold us over quite well.

While we had our ideas about the possible influences on Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" after watching and deconstructing the trailer -- Jean-Luc Godard's "Pierrot le Fou" and "Little Fugitive" -- the director himself has gone ahead and cleared up the movies that were in his mind when he set out to make the film.
