With so much Cannes speculation kicking around here's one thing we know for sure: Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" will be opening the festival. And frankly, that's pretty damn exciting. So far, the film has looked like a solid return to live-action filmmaking for the director who detoured with the stop-motion animated "Fantastic Mr. Fox," and this latest peek at the movie shows his whimsy hasn't abated one bit.

Things are looking very promising for Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom." The director's return to live action filmmaking after the detour into animation with the delightful "Fantastic Mr. Fox," has already impressed with its first trailer that, while clearly being from somewhere very firmly within his usual wheelhouse, looks to be endearingly fresh and vibrant. It seems as if Anderson's directorial voice has been reborn. With a spring date looming, a few new pictures have dropped to tide you over until 'Kingdom' 's release.

With six features under his belt (and a seventh on the way), Wes Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive filmmakers working today. And while his ongoing explorations of his obsessions have led to disappointments like "The Darjeeling Limited," his return to live action filmmaking following the charming "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" looks to find the director once again at the height of his powers.

Well here we are, in the brave new world of 2012. And at present, it's not too scary, although we swear that we'll beat the next person to death who makes a joke about the Roland Emmerich film. And after a 2011 that turned out to be a pretty decent year for cinema (if not necessarily one for the ages), we're now staring out across a few months that seem fairly barren, as the early months of the year always do.
