We can only imagine the zeal Screen Gems is experiencing when thinking about how their upcoming adaptation "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" could potentially tap into the young adult market in the same way that the "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games" movies have. However, after setting the leads with Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower, the recent casting seem to appease more of the "adult" adult crowd rather than the young adult crowd.

Before we begin, can we just have a moment of silence of Lane Pryce?...........Okay, with that out of the way, there's no need to weep for former "Mad Men" star Jared Harris as he's joining an upcoming and hotly touted young adult novel adaptation, along with another actress who is currently experiencing some small screen heat of her own.

With a release date now just over a year away, the wheels are beginning to turn a bit quicker on the long-developing "The Mortal Instruments." A couple of weeks ago, French actress Jemima West joined the film's leads Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower, and now two more actors are aboard in some small, villainous roles.

Oh yeah, "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones," We nearly forgot about you. It seems this movie has been spinning its wheels, moving from on again to off again to on again over the past little while. But it seems some casting is now beginning to happen, and a new face is joining the film.

With "Twilight" wrapping up this year, and "The Hunger Games" proving a giant hit, the hunt is on for the next big young adult movie franchise. And we suspect that of all the projects brewing, "The Mortal Instruments" has one of the best chances. The book series by Cassandra Clare has sold millions of copies across its four novels (plus two more in a spin-off series, "The Infernal Devices") to date, as many as any of its competitors. And since the movie version started development, the books' fervent fan-base has come out in force for any tidbit on the project.

With "The Hunger Games" killing everything in its sights at the box office, Sony has decided to get serious about its adaptation of "The Mortal Instruments," which has the potential to become a "Twilight"/"Hunger Games"-esque franchise, but perhaps even bigger. Or, at least, longer. Like the other aforementioned franchises, "Mortal Instruments" is based on a series of novels targeted at young adults, though, unlike those other franchises, author Cassandra Clare has six volumes planned compared to "Twilight"'s four and "Hunger Games"' three. Like a Stephen King for the YA set, Clare has been cranking out a new "Mortal Instruments" volume once year since 2007, and somehow found time to simultaneously write two books for the prequel trilogy series "The Infernal Devices." And, finally, Sony is set to make them into movies.

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the overclass, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, vampire romances "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.

It seems that more projects coming back to life. With "The Dark Tower" and "Arthur and Lancelot" headed to the big screen once again thanks to Warner Bros. earlier this week, another project thought left for dead last month is now back, alive and kicking.

If you only looked at the box office numbers, it would appear business is booming in Hollywood. And yet, left and right, projects are being postponed or outright canceled by the studios. Just this week, Legendary Pictures put the kibosh on the latest ill-advised blockbuster, a nine-figure adaptation of "Paradise Lost." And now Sony is pulling an Old Yeller on two more projects, with Columbia Pictures halting an adaptation of the violent comic, "The Boys," and genre shingle Screen Gems passing on kid-lit adaptation "The Mortal Instruments."

Sorry Team Speleers, Team Freeman (though was anyone rooting for this guy) and to a much lesser extent Team Pettyfer, another pretty boy has landed the plum role of the lead in "The Mortal Instruments."
