Ms. 45
Prior to making "Ms. 45," among the works of Abel Ferrara was the horror "The Driller Killer" and the porno, "9 Lives Of A Wet Pussy," so the expectation might be that a movie about a mute, meek young woman who gets raped and then exacts revenge on the world around might not be tasteful. But you'd be wrong.

Ms. 45
It doesn't take long into "Ms. 45" to know that you're inside an Abel Ferrara film. Four gunshots announce the title card of the movie, while within the first ten minutes, a young man gets raped twice — once on the way home from work, pulled into an alley and violated by a masked man, and again in her apartment by a burglar who decides to take her body when she doesn't have any cash. And by the way, she's mute too. Certainly, the indicators are all here that the man whose previous efforts at the time were the driller killer movie titled, uh, "Driller Killer" and a porno, along with a handful of shorts, wasn't exactly going to be pushing the creative envelope here. But, beneath the provocative opening and imagery is a picture with surprising restraint and a real sense of purpose.

Abel Ferrara
There are few directors who could count a porno among their early works ("9 Lives of a Wet Pussy," in case you're wondering), but then again, there are few filmmakers like Abel Ferrara. Perhaps he was always destined to court controversy, but that hasn't diminished Ferrara's distinctive, kinetic and yes, provocative, body of work that has seen him tell dark stories set in even darker corners of society. But once the initial power of those first viewings wear off, Ferarra's work reveals layers that weren't immediately apparent on repeated visits. And that may certainly be the case for the filmmaker's 1981 sophomore feature "Ms. 45."

Can we get a little shout out to Drafthouse Films? As the majors continue to put more money into big franchises (see everything being released in 2015), it's guys like Drafthouse (and A24, Roadside Attractions, IFC Films, etc.) that keep cinephiles excited. And in addition to taking on challenging foreign films and edgy American movies, Drafthouse has also resurrected cult fare as well. "Miami Connection," "Wake In Fright," and the forthcoming "The Visitor" are just some recent examples and there's one more to keep an eye on: Abel Ferrara's "Ms. 45."
