Many of those bringing films to the Croisette for the Cannes Film Festival, which let's not forget, kicks off tomorrow, are old hands there: Roman Polanski, James Gray, even Baz Luhrmann have all debuted at least one film there in the past. Alexander Payne isn't quite a first-time, but it's over a decade since he was there with "About Schmidt" in 2002, so his return with his latest, "Nebraska," is one of the most exciting moments in the festival (and the film was one of our ten most anticipated there).

With the actual schedule released today (cue charts and diagrams as attendees try to work out how to be in eight places at one time), the final pieces are falling into place for this year's Cannes Film Festival, and it's shaping up to be a terrific couple of weeks. The initial lineup was already impressive, but the addition of a couple of titles we were surprised not to see in the original announcement has made the selection even more an embarrassment of riches. As such, we were hard pressed to pick a top ten, but finally settled on the following choices, that, along with the honorable mentions, we feel represent the strongest of what is a very solid lineup. It should be noted that there's a great showing by the U.S. in this selection, as there is for French-language movies, which is reflective of the festival overall. With Steven Spielberg the head of the Cannes Competition jury too, it feels like Franco-American relations are at an all-time high, cinematically speaking at least.

There’s been some confusion about the look of Alexander Payne’s upcoming drama, “Nebraska” which will be in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month (fyi, if you’re headed to France, it’s playing late in the schedule.) Original reports had it pegged as shot in black and white and subsequent pieces said black and white wouldn’t be cost effective and Paramount, who was financing, forced Payne to shoot in color.

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

A few weeks ago, we took out our crystal ball and speculated on what movies might be appearing at the Cannes Film Festival when it kicks off in about six weeks or so. We made some educated guesses, ruled some other movies out and tossed some ideas around as we wait for the official announcement from organizers later this month. Well, it appears a bit of a clearer picture is emerging -- sort of -- as a handful of titles have been ruled out.

“You know his films do well at the Academy Awards,” producer Albert Berger told the Billings Gazette about Alexander Payne, and with "Sideways" and "The Descendants" earning a total of ten nominations and two wins (each for Best Screenplay) he's certainly not exaggerating. After 2011’s Oscar-winning “The Descendants,” Alexander Payne is looking for a little extra help in getting his follow-up feature “Nebraska” to the screen. The road trip flick starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte is seeking a supplement to its financing by shopping its international distribution rights. Paramount is distributing the film domestically, but FilmNation has reportedly already struck a number of key deals on behalf of Payne to get the film in front of more international audiences.

Listen, we know it's reductive to diminish an actor to a role he played over twenty years ago (holy fuck, it's been that long? -- we're feeling old...) but if we had said "Devin Ratray" your eyes would have glazed over, and you would have clicked on to something. But yes, Buzz McCallister himself from "Home Alone" will be up to no good in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska."
