Gravity, Bullock
Two of the most remarkable careers in today's Hollywood belong to Roger Corman and Jonathan Demme: the former the unimaginably influential director of over 50 films and driving force behind going on 400, most of them brilliant B-movies; the latter the difficult-to-pin-down helmer behind “Silence of the Lambs,” “Philadelphia” and “Stop Making Sense.” Corman is a Hollywood institution, still producing aged 88 (his next project is “Sharktopus vs Mermantula”), while Demme, startlingly, turned 70 this year, though he still works like a much younger, more contemporary man.

Oscars: Could A Movie Other Than 'Gravity,' '12 Years A Slave' Or 'American Hustle' Win Best Picture?
The awards season is in a bit of a lull, or an armistice if you will. With a few weeks passing since the most recent precursor awards, those up for the Oscars have been able to sit back and enjoy their status, most notably at this week's nominees luncheon. But the Cold War is about to end: voting for the Oscar winners gets underway on Friday, with the BAFTAs following on Sunday, and after that, it's going to be a fairly frantic couple of weeks ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday March 2nd.

American Hustle
Well, that's a wrap. "12 Years a Slave" won Best Drama, but "American Hustle" took three of the top prizes including Best Comedy/Musical, Best Actress Comedy/Musical and Best Supporting Actress. Probably the biggest surprise of the night, though not a shock if you've been reading the tea leaves of late, Matthew McConaughey scoring the Best Actor (Drama) prize for "Dallas Buyers Club" over Robert Redford, Chiwetel Ejiofor and that crowded field. More analysis tomorrow and in the meantime, check out to see how we did with our Globes predictions.

After a few restorative weeks (mostly spent watching Scott Adkins movies, in case you were wondering), we're back on the awards beat. We're now only ten days from the announcement of the Oscar nominations, with one of the busiest weeks of the season before that (DGA and BAFTA nominations are still to come this week, along with the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday).
