Divergent
To paraphrase a salient tweet from L.A. Times writer Ben Fritz, It’s no “Hunger Games” or “Twilight,” but with a solid $56.7 million opening, the sci-fi YA adaptation “Divergent” won’t be a “Vampire Academy” or “Mortal Instruments”-type flop either. And yes, they tend to come in those black and white terms so far: either a massive success or a bomb (though ‘Mortal Instruments’ seems like it may limp towards a sequel). But that’s all very relative.

Need For Speed
Well, this was unexpected (that is if you’re not attentively looking at Friday and Saturday numbers with a sniper’s eyes). You might think, considering the success of “The Fast & Furious” series, that something similarly adrenaline-focused like the vroom-fast “Need For Speed” film would be critic-proof, and that audiences—who have to wait an extra year for a new ‘Fast & Furious’ film—might check into the junior series starring Aaron Paul. But it was not to be. While Disney was already projecting low (at least low for a would-be car franchise) $20 million numbers for “Need For Speed,” the film (which was roasted by critics; here’s our review) sputtered to the finish line with $17.8 million at the box office, stalling at the number 3 position for its opening weekend debut.

Engineered for maximum velocity, super-torqued hairpin turns and high-octane thrills (obviously), thanks to the likes of the “Fast & Furious,” you should know exactly what to expect from the upcoming junior series, “Need For Speed” aka “Hot Wheels: The Movie.” But if the ‘F&F’ series is often absurdly entertaining with riotous cinematic maximalism in the pole position, “Need For Speed” is comparatively humorless, arguably dumber and doesn’t boast the same visual horsepower.

Need For Speed
Coming around the bend and heading into cinemas is "Need For Speed," and the question is whether or not the millions and millions of console fans who have spent hours tinkering with their cars and driving them on tracks around the world will get off the couch to see this. It's an eternal question that movie studios face when adapting video games, and DreamWorks is really trying hard to lure in the core.

Need For Speed
We’re still a couple of weeks away from “Need For Speed,” which means we’re not yet past Disney’s marketing blitzkrieg. Clips and featurettes have rained down like so much shrapnel from exploded cars. So here are two more clips featuring leather jackets and expensive vehicles.

Need For Speed
“Need for Speed” is on its way, and on the (w)heels of a Super Bowl spot and a slew of featurettes and clips comes... more featurettes and clips, setting up the premise (uh, driving expensive cars really fast, while a guy in a helicopter tells you where to go) and talking up the film's roots in the massive “Need for Speed” videogame franchise.

Need For Speed
As of 2009, 140 million copies of the "Need For Speed" video game had been sold, and who knows how many countless more million units have been shifted since, but will that audience show up to see the big-screen version of their favorite pedal pushing console time waster? That's the riddle Hollywood eternally tries to solve with each video game adaptation though they're hoping they got it right here.

Need For Speed
Aaron Paul is going from breaking bad to breaking speed limits (sorry), and trying on his franchise wings with "Need For Speed," which is using a Super Bowl ad slot to get you in the racing mood.

Yes, we know Aaron Paul has a name but let's face it, we still can't forget "Breaking Bad" and neither can most folks considering how much the "alternate ending" to the series was passed around over the weekend. So, for our purposes at the moment, "Need For Speed" stars Jesse Pinkman and once again he's going to be yelling at stuff, have a pretty girl at this side all while trying to outfox a wily criminal.

Reader, I haven't seen the final episode of “Breaking Bad.” I haven't even seen the final season of “Breaking Bad”, or even the final episode of the first season of “Breaking Bad.” And though I have just willfully thrown away whatever Playlist cred I might ever have gained, I promise you this—I am working on it. I have seen most of the first season now, and I don't know why I wasn't watching it before..
