While we weep for Jesse Pinkman, held captive by Breaking Todd and forced to keep cooking meth, the actor himself, Aaron Paul, is now making a move to the big leagues. He's toplining his first major movie and potential franchise to boot, with "Need For Speed." And we love you man, but we wish this looked better...

Fast & Furious 7
We know, looking ahead to 2014 when there is still so much to come in 2013 is a bit silly, but a handful of new images are here and we figured we might as well show 'em off all in one place. So without further delay ...

Casting rumors for "Fifty Shades of Grey," Universal's adaptation of the surprise literary smash that started out life as online "Twilight" fan fiction, have been swirling since the rights were snapped up last year. Initial contenders Emma Watson and Elizabeth Olsen downplayed rumors before being ruled out entirely, and speculation about Kristen Stewart and Keira Knightley proving just as baseless. But with Sam Taylor-Wood officially onboard to direct, a cast needs to be established quickly, with a release date less than a year away. The latest actress who could be up for the role: Dakota Johnson, who starred in small, buzzy roles in both "21 Jump Street" and "The Social Network" before anchoring a short-lived Fox sitcom called "Ben and Kate," at least according to The Wrap.

DreamWorks’ upcoming “Need For Speed” had already been busy lining up a pretty decent cast, and that was enough to make us optimistic that this video game adaptation might be the one to buck the trend. Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper and Imogen Poots were the big three so far to give their seal of approval and sign on to star in the Scott Waugh (“Act of Valor”) directed picture, as well as the likes of Rami Malek (“The Master”), Kid Cudi and Ramon Rodriguez. Now the film has gone and added an unexpected name to the cast. Who knows whether he just needs the pay-check or whether he too thinks there’s more to this project than meets the eye, but Michael Keaton will also be feeling the need for speed.

There’s no real reason why there’s yet to be a great, good, or arguably even a solid film adaptation of a video game. In fact, it’s frankly baffling that we’ve yet to see even one exception just to prove the rule. Sure, there are hurdles to overcome to make a great game work in a fundamentally different medium, but they can’t be insurmountable and surely it’s only a matter of time before someone gets it right? One film that looks like it has that potential is DreamWorks’ “Need For Speed,” which can surely play fast and loose with the narrative, and already has some great talent attached.

It's election night, but dammit, franchises need to be cast. And before we all sit in front of the TV/internet clutching our stomachs nervously, hoping that we never hear the words "hanging chads," the upcoming "Need For Speed" has added one more name to the cast.

As any reader of the site knows, we're big fans of Imogen Poots, and we'll just go ahead and say that she's the secret weapon of both the upcoming "A Late Quartet" and "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which premiered at TIFF last month. Her star is on the rise, as she's been seen rubbing elbows with Terrence Malick in "Knight Of Cups." And now she's landed her first bona fide blockbuster movie.

"Need For Speed" seems to be coming at the meeting place of two different trends in Hollywood: the racing movie and the video game adaptation. With the "Fast & Furious" franchise still going as strong as ever, it seems everyone in Hollywood is chasing a racing flick or project. And after considering a couple of unknowns for the lead, DreamWorks has pinned their franchise hopes on "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul. Bitch.

After a few years that have seen studios deciding to focus on trying to make movies out of board games, it looks, from the last couple of days, as though video games are cycling back around as the hot source material. Monday saw Michael Fassbender announced as the star and producer of a film based on Ubisoft's hugely popular "Assassin's Creed" franchise, while yesterday a movie based on the long-running "Deus Ex" series was set up at CBS Films, Sony's "God Of War" film got new writers, and Dreamworks' "Need For Speed" got a firm 2014 release date.

Once you train an audience like seals to spend more than half to, they'll keep coming. At least that's what Hollywood thinks as the trend of stretching out franchise finales continues. With Warner Bros. and Lionsgate respectively raking in dough by splitting "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows" and "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" into two-parters, the latter studio is going to continue that trend with "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay."
