Having grossed $137 million and counting, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s “Neighbors” is the 11th highest grossing R-rated comedy domestically to date. Perhaps more importantly, its opening weekend was the 4th highest ever for an R-rated laugher. And with international numbers, it has grossed $223 million and rising (10th highest ever). Considering its budget was $18 million, that’s a whole lot of profit. And that’s exactly what Rogen and Goldberg were aiming for.

Godzilla
Up from the depths, 30 stories tall, “Godzilla” absolutely crushed it this weekend, almost grabbing the highest North American opening weekend of the year. The film was poised to do so with an estimated $98 million weekend, $3 million higher than “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and its $95 million opening in April, but those estimates were evidently slightly too high. Nonetheless, the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures movie took the top slot with a whopping $93.2 million.

After this weekend's shockingly huge haul for "Neighbors," his Seth Rogen/Zac Efron frat comedy, director Nicholas Stoller can probably do anything that he wants to next. So when we sat down with the director in New York recently, we couldn't help but pick his brain as to what projects would follow this very funny film—including his upcoming comedy with Rogen and Kevin Hart, the possibility of a third Muppets movie for Disney, and another film in the same universe as "Get Him to the Greek" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (Stoller also reveals how "Neighbors" is connected to these movies).

It looks like Spider-Man's biggest villains this weekend were Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. The duo's "Neighbors" knocked Sony's superhero from the top slot with a big $51 million opening.

Director Nicholas Stoller Talks The 5 Movies That Influenced ‘Neighbors’
Director Nicholas Stoller has steadily been rising in the ranks, having worked for many years under Judd Apatow on everything from “Undeclared” to a string of successful studio comedies, including “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and 2012’s “The Five-Year Engagement.” (He was also involve with both of Disney’s recent Muppets movies.) But Stoller is about to break into the big leagues with this weekend’s gut-busting “Neighbors,” a film that pits Seth Rogen’s new dad against Zac Efron’s rowdy frat leader in a war for suburban supremacy. We recently sat down with Stoller and chatted about the five biggest influences on his new film, most of which will be very surprising (especially for those that have already seen the film).

The last time Universal screened one of their big summer comedies at South by Southwest, it turned out to be "Bridesmaids"—a movie that not only went on to be a massive financial success (and a breakthrough for its cowriter/star Kristin Wiig) but a critical one as well, even earning an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. So a fair amount of anticipation and excitement greeted tonight's "work-in-progress" (although look, it seems totally finished) screening of the new Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy "Neighbors." And while "Neighbors" doesn't come close to capturing "Bridesmaids'" emotional honesty, it could have a chance of one-upping that film in the box office. Simply put, "Neighbors" is one of the funniest, most visually inventive studio comedies in recent memory.

So far, 2014 hasn't given moviegoers a movie to really let loose with. But that all ends next week, when Seth Rogen and Zac Efron's "Neighbors" rocks the house, with the bawdy comedy coming in all its R-rated fury. And to get a sense of what you're in for, the soundtrack should tip you off.

Yes, "Neighbors" is foremost a comedy about two man-children who face off against each other and get into man-children-esque hijinks. But there is a thematic kernel underneath it all too. We know, we don't want to take away from the red band zaniness of the movie either, but hear us out.

"... we laughed until we ached. Then we laughed some more," Drew Taylor wrote in his review of "Neighbors" out of SXSW last month, and the buzz certainly is building about the summer comedy. And just a few days after a couple of red band trailers dropped for the movie, the first clip is here.
