A little bit of "writers hired to adapt things" news this Sunday afternoon. DreamWorks has hired Mike White (“School of Rock,” the recently-cancelled “Enlightened”) to adapt the latest novel from Matthew Quick, author of “Silver Linings Playbook.” Quick’s “The Good Luck of Right Now” will be published Spring 2014 and is about a man who takes care of his mother with dementia and falls for a librarian who believes she and her brother were once abducted by aliens.

Trying to predict what Joe Wright will do next is a fool's errand. The director has moved effortlessly from literary adaptations ("Pride & Prejudice") to WWII sagas ("Atonement") to assassin thrillers ("Hanna") to Powell & Pressburger styled melodrama ("Anna Karenina") with ease. But making a fantasy has long been an itch he's been eager to scratch, and a new version of "The Little Mermaid" was once something he was eager to do (though the recent run of fairy tales movies has taken a bit of his enthusiasm out of doing it). But now he's latched onto something that could finally see him take on the fantasy genre.

In 2010 it was announced that Henry Selick, the beloved director of “Nightmare Before Christmas,” had left Laika Studios, the Portland, Oregon-based animation studio run by Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight. Knight had hired Selick back in 2002 to help transition the studio from Will Vinton Studios (home of the California Raisins, among others) into a 21st century powerhouse. Selick’s first animated feature, the gorgeous “Coraline,” was released in 2009, but just a year later Disney and Pixar came courting and Selick packed his bags. Things have been quiet for a little while but some details have started to emerge about his Pixar project, while Disney has signed him on to a highly coveted property.

HBO Adaptation Of Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' Planned To Be Effects-Heavy Six Season SeriesThe colossal failure of motion-capture animation "Mars Needs Moms," and the subsequent cancellation by Disney on the planned performance capture remake of "Yellow Submarine," seems to have given Robert Zemeckis, something of a pioneer of the format, pause for thought. The director of mega-hits like "Back to the Future" and "Forrest Gump" hasn't made a live action picture since 2000's double bill of "What Lies Beneath" and "Cast Away," but recent months have seen him linked to any number of potential projects starring real people, rather than dead-eyed facsimiles, including a remake of "The Wizard of Oz" (not happening, thank God), "The Man of Steel," a sequel to "Roger Rabbit," and long-gestating time travel romance "Replay."

Since his early days in the comics world, the British sci-fi fantasy author and goth heartthrob, has consistently expanded his audience, to the extent that his books are now mainstays in the top reaches of the bestseller charts, and his 1.5 million Twitter followers hang on his every word. Furthermore, while he may not have the prose skills of a contemporary like, say, Michael Chabon, he's a hell of a storyteller, playing with myth and folklore and refashioning it into something new, and entirely compelling.
