Though he’s never been a superstar, after four decades of making music there is no question that Nick Cave is a legend. Singer, songwriter and occasional composer, Cave has been playing in bands since he was in his teens, from his post-punk group The Birthday Party, to his back-to-basics side project Grinderman, to his solo work to his band for over 30 years, The Bad Seeds. Though his music has only ever crossed over into the mainstream a few times (the soundtrack staple “Red Right Hand” and Kylie Minogue duet “Where The Wild Roses Grow”), he has nevertheless amassed an army of dedicated fans all over the world. The new documentary “20,000 Days On Earth” is neither the career retrospective or concert film you might, but rather a snapshot of the musician, now 57, still trying to connect with his muse.

Last week we brought you word that Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Beastie Boy Ad-Rock where bringing their musical skills to a couple of films headed to Sundance by providing a score (Lynn Shelton's "Laggies" and the baseball flick "No No: A Dockumentary," respectively). Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg. As you might suspect, the worlds of indie film and indie music aren't so far apart and there will be a lot of music to be heard in the films headed to Park City next week, so let's dive in...

Remember that time when Nick Cave was hired to write the script for "Gladiator 2"? Oh, you don't? Well, we reported on it back in 2009 and, thanks to Nick Cave's recent appearance (described as "tense" and "daunting") on the "WTF with Marc Maron" podcast, that piece of trivia is hitting the interwebs again.

Have you ever wanted to hang out with eternal badass Nick Cave? Well, frankly, who wouldn't? But most of us won't ever get the chance to sit down and break bread with the musician/writer/raconteur, so this project may just be the next best thing. It turns out Cave has been hard at work on a secretive docu-drama entitled "20,000 Days On Earth," and the first details of the project are now coming to light.

As longtime collaborators, John Hillcoat and Nick Cave are never too far apart when it comes their various cinematic and musical projects. On the movie front, the pair go all the way back to Hillcoat's directorial debut "Ghosts...Of The Civil Dead" which Cave co-wrote and starred in, while last year they both brought their talents to "Lawless." Meanwhile, when Cave gets back in the studio, Hillcoat is usually around to help get a distinctive music video out in the world.

It's now coming on four years since Gaspar Noé's last feature effort, the trippy "Enter The Void." But he hasn't been sitting idle. The helmer directed a segment of the omnibus film "7 Days In Havana" that made festival rounds last year, and he also hung around the set of Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives," perhaps to talk with the actor about starring in the Bret Easton Ellis-penned "The Golden Suicides," which both were linked to oh so long ago. But until his next feature is sorted out, Noé kicked off 2013 with an interesting excursion.

There have been several benefit CDs over the years to assist the wrongly accused West Memphis Three trio -- Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin -- the subject of the crucial HBO documentaries "Paradise Lost 1-3" that led to their partial exoneration in 2010 (though not from a legal standpoint, they were forced to take the Alford plea, though all signs pointed to a super botched investigation and prosecution).

It takes a fair amount of talent to appear in a film alongside practiced scene-stealers like Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke and Shia LaBeouf. But of course, as audiences have been aware of for getting on two decades, since he came to attention in "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert," Guy Pearce is possessed of an unusual amount of talent.

Perhaps consider this a bit of a spoiler post, at least musically. So if you want to go in blind to John Hillcoat's prohibition drama "Lawless," we suggest you divert your eyes now. For the rest of you still with us, man, the soundtrack to "Lawless" is just one more reason to get excited for the film which lands on August 29th. By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who wrote the haunting scores for "The Proposition," "The Road" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (the multi-hyphenate Cave, an author, also wrote the "Lawless" screenplay).
