Best of 2014, midway
Here's a bold statement: 2014 is looking like a pretty damn good year for movies so far. We've had a few strong ones in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013 were all overflowing with goodness), but a little less than halfway through this year, and the discerning moviegoer has been spoiled with choices. Of course, there's been a lot of swill, but from the blockbuster to tiny foreign indies, there's been plenty worth checking out.

If you go into Kelly Reichardt's “Night Moves” cold, or knowing only that it's a drama about ecoterrorism from the director of “Meek's Cutoff” and “Wendy & Lucy,” you might wonder about her leading actress, a mousy, moon-faced brunette whose occasionally eerie stillness reflects both her character's implacable dedication to the cause and her failure to look beneath the surface of her beliefs. When I saw the movie at Toronto last fall, I didn't realize until the end credits I'd been watching Dakota Fanning the entire time. As she did with Michelle Williams, whom Fanning calls one of her favorite actresses, Reichardt peels away Fanning's youthful precocity to find an engrossing stillness underneath -- or rather, she got out of the way and let Fanning do it to herself.

Night Moves, Kelly Reichardt
"These are tough, this is like a little quiz." When we got a chance recently to chat with Kelly Reichardt, she was game if not a little trepidatious to take part in another of our semi-regular features in which we attempt to scavenge through a filmmaker's life in cinema, in hopes of finding out how the movies have influenced their life and work. The filmmaker's latest minimalist feature "Night Moves" which she directed, edited and co-wrote (with frequent collaborator, Oregon novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Raymond), begins rolling out to independent theaters across the country this Friday.

Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard in "Night Moves"
For some people, taking a stand means signing on online petition, maybe writing a letter to their local politician or even marching in an organized protest. But for others they desire something with more direct results, even if that means something violent and illegal. And that's the jumping off point for Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves," an intimate look at a trio of activists who are plotting something that will change their lives forever.

There's a million ways for the perfect plan to go wrong, and the trio leading Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves" are trying to avoid them all. Summer 2014 preview
The temperatures are rising, the coats are going into storage, and the TV spots are getting more prevalent. That's right, it's almost time for summer movie season again. The months of May through August are traditionally the biggest in the multiplex calendar, but the lines have become increasingly blurred in recent years—if "Noah" and "Divergent" didn't kick off blockbuster season, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" certainly did, and that was three weeks ago.

Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard in "Night Moves"
Deliberate and the measured, the oeuvre of Kelly Reichardt—which has included films "Old Joy," "Wendy & Lucy" and "Meek's Crossing"—isn't for everyone. That said, she's been able to attract some pretty terrific talent for her films, with Michelle Williams making two movies with the director. Her next project, "Night Moves," she rounds up Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard for a tale with a more provocative punch.

20 Best 2014 Films We've Already Seen
The more OCD among us here at Playlist Towers find it a source of constant aggravation that release dates vary so much from territory to territory, and festivals often get premieres a full 18-or-so months before a film gains a proper U.S. release, that doing a cut-and-dried list of any given year’s movies becomes less science than art. And while it’s an art that has already yielded our first magnum opus of the year, the 100 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2014, (and we should probably be awarded the rest of January off as a result) there’s still a category of film we’ve left unmined: those movies that we saw and reviewed in 2013 at festivals or sneak screenings or parts foreign that won’t be in theaters until 2014.
