So, just how similar are Ivan Reitman's "No Strings Attached" and Will Gluck's "Friends With Benefits"? Well, at one time they were both titled "Friends With Benefits" and Screen Gems had to do some legal dancing to keep the title, forcing the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher vehicle to change names.

'The Rite' Leads Weak Winter Box Office

Box office receipts were down in 2010, and the early winter season of 2011 is already vastly trailing the opening of last year. Of course, most people are forecasting doom, forgetting that early 2010 was when "Avatar" was still raking in billion dollar profits, and it would be the remaining non-"Avatar" seasons of 2010 that would shit the bed, so to speak. So the industry is in fine shape for the winter, at least, as this year has more spillover successes from the previous year still playing, as well as the somewhat-blockbustery success of "The Green Hornet" leading the way.

Weekend Box Office: Audiences Get Their Strings Attached To 'No Strings Attached'

Not much news to report during this quiet January weekend. One wide release opened to numbers that a studio would expect given two publicity-heavy stars in January ($20.3 million). “No Strings Attached” matched industry expectations, bringing good news to all involved, though if you're the only wide release in a single weekend, you're really banking on at least $20 mil. Budget numbers on this film go from $25 to $35 million, but there were extensive reshoots and it couldn’t have been too cheap to get these two multi-tasking stars in the fold.

Has everyone recovered from their Golden Globes hangover? Ricky Gervais is now in witness protection and Hollywood is all in extra therapy after having jokes made at their expense by that mean, mean man. Let's just distract ourselves with the entertainment provided by the finger pointing blame game being played by "The Green Hornet" team. It's the number one movie in America, but someone must answer for its suckage! We've at least successfully scared Michel Gondry off doing any more studio action comedies, so there's your silver lining. Chin up, movie fans, it's a new weekend with a fresh new crop of cinematic offerings to get excited about. Aw fuck it, everyone's at Sundance, watching the movies we'll see in six months, so what we have is a sex-com, "No Strings Attached' (spoiler alert, there are strings attached), a pink slip drama, "The Company Men" (topical!) and a bunch of older festival stuff in limited release that are seeing the light of projection booths on our shores.

Review: 'No Strings Attached' Has Plenty Of Strings Attached

It's fair to say that the state of the modern romantic-comedy is a dismal one. In the era of "Leap Year," "The Ugly Truth" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic" -- where the heroes and heroines behave in a way unrecognizable to actual human beings, the plots are interchangable and contrived, and the comedy, and indeed the romance, are nowhere to be found -- it's tempting to give the merely average likes of "Definitely Maybe" or "(500) Days of Summer" a pass, simply for having likable characters or a few interesting scenes.

So, Natalie Portman took home Best Actress at the Golden Globes last night but her most lasting impression may be the cringeworthy acceptance speech capped off the dorkiest laugh ever. Sorry, Brendan Fraser, your amazing clap has been dethroned. But onwards and upwards -- the actress has a new movie opening Friday, the friends with benefits comedy "No Strings Attached" with Ashton Kutcher.

"No Strings Attached," we have officially given up on you. This writer's been banging the drum for Liz Meriwether's script "Fuckbuddies" for some time now, and despite a retitling, to "No Strings Attached," the presence of fallen comedy legend Ivan Reitman in the director's chair and Ashton Kutcher in the male lead, the cast looked promising: Natalie Portman was starring, and normally reliable names like Kevin Kline, Jake Johnson, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, Ophelia Lovibond and Olivia Thirlby were all involved.

The new poster for the upcoming fuckbuddy comedy "No Strings Attached" with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher (not be confused with "Friends With Benefits," "Just Go With It" or "Hall Pass") has arrived and it gets straight to the point. It shows the two leads post-coitus (or at least that's what we assume by Portman's carefully crafted head of tousled hair) getting their remarkably well-pressed clothing backing on. We'd swear we just saw this same picture in a catalog for Abercrombie & Fitch.

Ever since we read Liz Meriwether's Black Listed script (originally titled "Fuckbuddies") for the Ivan Reitman-helmed romantic-comedy "No Strings Attached," we've been cautiously looking forward to the film. Sure, Reitman raised some eyebrows, having not made a film even vaguely worth a damn since "Dave," and we weren't exactly over-enamored by the casting of Ashton Kutcher, but the rest of the cast, toplined by Natalie Portman, were promising, and, more importantly, Meriwether's script was genuinely funny, with a distinctive voice (although it should be said, it has a love-it-or-hate-it reputation around town) -- so much so, we named her as one of our five screenwriters on the rise.

The first image has arrived for the upcoming comedy "No Strings Attached," and how weird it is that the most visually arresting thing in it is a bunch of carrots?
