300: Rise Of An Empire
It arrived much too late, some seven years after the fact. It was met with most middling reviews, and it featured no real stars to speak of. But that could not stop “300: Rise Of An Empire,” the slightly less-ripped, less-sweaty, otherwise pretty-much-the-same sequel from dominating the box office (our review here). The Warner Bros. sequel might not have been in vogue with the blogosphere, but the rest of the country was more than happy to attend.

Liam Neeson, Non-Stop
If it felt like a forgettable and rather dead weekend at the box office, that’s because it was. Studios typically don’t release major films in theaters the weekend of the Academy Awards, the conventional wisdom being that everyone’s going to be watching the awards, gearing up for the awards, and or doing something that involves preparing for the ceremony and not going to movies.

Celebrate Action Stars After 60
This week, Liam Neeson can be seen in “Non Stop,” the latest in a surprisingly active career as an action star. While Neeson has a history peppered with prestige films here and there, make no mistake, his most recent resumé consists of kicking ass and taking names. What no one mentions is that Neeson, who is soon scheduled to show up in a third “Taken” film, is actually a spectacular 61 years old, which is impressive considering the leaping, punching, and growling he’s done in recent years. Have you seen your parents lately? They can barely open the door and hoodies terrify them.

Liam Neeson, Non-Stop
Since 2009's surprise hit "Taken," Liam Neeson, an actor formerly known for his serious performances in things like "Schindler's List" and "Michael Collins," has taken up residence as a go-to action icon. In the last few years he's been "Taken" twice (with a third installment on the way), battled a nasty nest of aquatic aliens in "Battleship," and been mercilessly hunted by a pack of wild wolves in the admirably grim "The Grey." With his massive frame and his gravelly voice that sounds like he's continually just finished off several dozen cigarettes, he's the rare action star who actually seems like he could handle the preposterous situations he's dealt. And in his latest thriller, "Non-Stop," that situation is pretty preposterous indeed: this time the star is cast as an alcoholic air marshal accused of hijacking a transatlantic flight. Thankfully, no wolves are on the plane.

We've covered Liam Neeson's upcoming “Non-Stop” before here as “Taken on a Plane,” because really, how else do you describe it? Bryan Mills is practically a goddamn anagram of Bill Marks, Neeson's character name in this one, and it's directed by Jaume Collet-Sera, who made what film historians now refer to as the first “Taken” retread, “Unknown,” back in 2011. Anyway, if you urgently desire to hear Neeson's half-Irish half-whisper meting out more threats, you'll be able to February 28th.

Liam Neeson, Non-Stop
The premise of the "Taken" franchise is simple: someone gets taken, and then Liam Neeson kicks a bunch of ass to get them back. It's a formula that has been very financially lucrative across two films so far, so if it isn't broke, don't fix it, right? Wrong. It would seem that Liam Neeson cares quite deeply about not repeating himself and has offered a rather interesting clue about the next installment of the franchise, set to shoot this spring.

Is Liam Neeson even trying anymore? His movie scripts these days seem to be Mad Libs: One man must face [insert adversary] using his special set of skills or else [insert threat]. From vague ethic groups in "Taken" to wolves in "The Grey" to something we can't remember in "Unknown," Neeson has been punching and kicking his way into a steady string of mediocre, box office hits. That's right America, "Non-Stop" is your fault.

Liam Neeson might be dismissive of the idea of a third "Taken" movie, but that doesn't mean that the Irish actor is done with ass-kicking. 2013 sees Neeson reteam with his "Unknown" director Jaume Collet-Serra for "Non-Stop," an airborne thriller which sees Neeson play an air marshall who receives a text message telling him that unless a $150 million ransom is paid, a passenger will die every twenty minutes. Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery, Nate Parker, Scoot McNairy and Corey Stoll are among the suspects, and a first look at Neeson in the film has arrived, courtesy of EW. Yes, it's a man with a gun on a plane.

While we wait for Fox to convince Liam Neeson to return for "Taken 3," that they clearly want, for those of you looking for more low-rent, insipid action from the actor, he's got "Non-Stop" coming. It's just too bad he's bringing some other actors who deserve better down with him.
