Nymphomaniac Volume II
In case you thought Lars von Trier was done cheerfully provoking audiences via his two part opus "Nymphomaniac," guess again. The enfant terrible still has a director's cut up his sleeve, and after unveiling Volume I at the Berlin Film Festival (our review), he's hitting the Venice Film Festival with Volume II. As a bonus, the fest will will be the first place where both versions will be seen together. But if you can't be there, here's three graphic clips hinting at said director's cut. Warning: these clips are very NSFW.

In what’s become an annual tradition, this week we’re kicking off our On The Rise series of features in which we take a look at emerging and blossoming talent across a variety of fields. This year, we’re expanding our remit to encompass a couple more categories and subcategories, but we’re starting with a perennial favorite: cinematographers.

Willem Dafoe Says " 'Antichrist' Is A More Dangerous, Risky Movie Than 'Nymphomaniac' "

Antichrist Willem Dafoe
Having worked with Lars von Trier on four movies to date (including the two-volume "Nymphomaniac"), Dafoe is more than familiar with director's boundary-pushing narratives. After all, his character did get his balls crushed and was jerked off while unconscious until he ejaculated blood in "Antichrist." And probably for that reason alone, Willem Dafoe believes that film mashes more controversy buttons than von Trier's newest provocation.

Nymphomaniac Vol II — Director's Cut
How much more can you take? With the theatrical version of Lars von Trier's two part epic "Nymphomaniac" already sprawling over four hours, there's still his director's cut to contend with. The first volume of his uncensored vision debuted earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival (our review), and now volume two heads to Venice and a new image and hilarious poster have arrived.

Venice 2014
It feels like film festival announcements get earlier and earlier every year. There's still a week of July left, and we've already had major announcements from TIFF, NYFF and even London and Tokyo (which don't happen until November, and will be opening with "The Imitation Game" and "Big Hero 6" respectively). But before any of those arrive, we've got the 71st Venice Film Festival, and after unveiling their big-ticket opener with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman," the rest of the line-up for the official competition was announced in Rome this morning.

With news arriving recently that Lars von Trier is writing a Detroit-set horror film and contemplating an action movie, he's not quite finished with "Nymphomaniac." Yes, the film has been released (read our review here), but the director's cut is still brewing. He showed off Volume 1 of his vision at the Berlin Film Festival in February, and while we thought he might bring ‘Volume 2’ to Cannes, it looks like it will instead be crossing the ocean.

Directors Cut Feature
Blessed/cursed with one of the most confusing and prolonged release strategies in recent memory, (blessed in that it has kept the movie in the conversation longer; cursed because that’s longer for everyone to get bored and irritated with it too) the second part of Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” opens in the U.S. this weekend (our ‘Vol II’ review is here). Our stock of sex puns may have been well and truly plundered (note how we couldn’t even bring ourselves to say “this coming weekend”) but that’s still not the end of it, as ‘Vol II’ also has a director’s cut on the way (the director’s preferred version of ‘Vol I’ played Berlin some weeks after the theatrical cut had already opened).

Films About Weird, Kinky or Compulsive Sex
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac,” Volume 1 of which opens in the US this weekend (our review is here) is not Shia LaBeouf’s accent, it's that it’s a film that is totally, unashamedly, unavoidably about sex. While coitus, rumpy, intercourse, balling, humping, beast-with-two-back-making does feature in some shape or form with extreme frequency in cinema, it only rarely forms the central, wait for it, thrust of the story, likely partly because distributors (especially in the U.S.) are often accused of a streak of puritanism when it comes to sex, particularly when compared to the their much more carefree attitude toward violence, and partly because even today mainstream audiences can be put off by even a whiff of the smutty-old-man-in-a-dirty-mac connotation. Which means that furthermore, films like “Nymphomaniac” that delve into the darker recesses of human sexuality--power play, taboo fantasies and fetishes, BDSM, sex addiction, etc--are even fewer.
