Lars von Trier's two-part, multi-version “Nymphomaniac” is destined to divide opinion the way it is itself divided down the middle (and as if it wasn't different enough to different viewers, there are also multiple versions: this is a review of the shorter, theatrical cut of the second volume). If “Vol. I” felt at times like a long-winded dirty joke – meandering, incoherently provocative, self-indulgent without being fun enough to make up for it – then “Vol. II” might just be the punchline (though many found a lot to like in the first volume's exuberant array of explicit sexuality and bizarre analogy: for a positive take you can read our review on Part I here). It's an extremely long way from being a perfect film, but undoubtedly (and whatever you thought of “Vol. I”), there's enough going on in the second volume to keep you stroking your chins (or other, more...private...parts).

Nymphomaniac
It's probably safe to say that making Lars von Trier's two-part sex epic "Nymphomaniac" was far from the usual film experience. But even for Charlotte Gainsbourg, making her third movie with the director following "Antichrist" and "Melancholia," the production offered up some interesting decisions for the actress. Namely, she got to pick her own sex stunt double.

Nymphomaniac
Well, after three years of talking about it, “Nymphomaniac: Volume I” is finally available to watch in the U.S. via OnDemand starting today. You still have to wait one more month for the second half, but hopefully, the first volume will be enough to keep you satisfied for now (and it should be — read our review). To honor the film’s OnDemand release, a new 30-second spot which will give you a good taste of what “Nymphomaniac” is about. It’s actually safe to view the clip at work too. The spot prominently features Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Uma Thurman who star in the film alongside Shia LaBeouf and Stacy Martin.

12 Films To See In March
The dolorous effects of winter are slowly, ever so slowly, making way for the bright world of spring. Until then, and especially if you’re in one of the regions still covered in snow, you’re probably spending quite a bit of time at the local multiplex. Since February was so short we’re adding an additional two movies to tide you over this month, so hopefully you’ll have a backlog of entertainment for when you can come out of hibernation.

Nymphomaniac
While it's not nearly as provocative as the very NSFW version that dropped late last year, the U.S. trailer for "Nymphomaniac: Volume 1" will surely still raise a few eyebrows. And for fans, it offers up new footage and voiceover as well, to ease you in to Lars von Trier's latest assault on the sense and intellect.

Nymphomaniac press conference
Yes, Shia LaBeouf stole the show, aping from or homaging a 1995 press conference appearance by maverick footballer Eric Cantona today at the Berlin Film Festival. But aside from that prankster move – some say veering towards Joaquin Phoenix-like performance art – the press conference went off like it normally might have.

Lars von Trier is going to Hell. The devil, after all, has all the best tunes, and on the evidence of "Nymphomaniac Part 1," which has its world premiere in its unexpurgated, director-preferred 145-minute version at the Berlin Film Festival, von Trier is a maestro at his zenith, conducting what may very well be his magnum opus. It is a symphony, or perhaps a thrusting, punk-inflected heavy metal power grind of rude, funny, sexy, sad, gross, pretentious, meta and brilliant, and sometimes all of these things at the same time. But out of what should be discordant, salacious, self-indulgent and ugly, von Trier, through sheer storytelling and filmmaking chutzpah, has crafted something witty and clever and thrilling, that absorbed our attention like a sponge and displayed, beneath all that brio, a kind of wisdom we haven't seen before from the filmmaker.

A strange afternoon in Berlin today. Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac Part 1” (the long version that hasn’t been seen until now) screened this morning at the Berlin Film Festival, and the press conference that followed had a few head-scratching moments. First off, Lars Von Trier himself showed up wearing a Cannes “Persona Non Grata” T-shirt (an overt reference to his banning from the French festival the year “Melancholia” played), but kept his vow to no longer speak to press by not appearing in the press conference.

Berlin 2014 preview
This Thursday, just a few scant weeks after Sundance has rolled up its red carpet, we’ll be plunging into Europe’s first major festival. The Berlin Film Festival, aka the Berlinale, has (like everything else) a lower profile than Cannes and perhaps a less glamorous aura than Venice. But, in a way, that counts toward its specific identity: with the European Film Market (which is one of the three biggest in the world) and the Talent Campus, a major program of workshops and masterclasses attended by students and professionals alike, from all disciplines, from all over the world, the Berlinale feels more businesslike and no-nonsense, less seduced by the glitz of the industry than by the actual films, and by fostering the talents that make them.
