Lars von Trier is going to Hell. The devil, after all, has all the best tunes, and on the evidence of "Nymphomaniac Part 1," which has its world premiere in its unexpurgated, director-preferred 145-minute version at the Berlin Film Festival, von Trier is a maestro at his zenith, conducting what may very well be his magnum opus. It is a symphony, or perhaps a thrusting, punk-inflected heavy metal power grind of rude, funny, sexy, sad, gross, pretentious, meta and brilliant, and sometimes all of these things at the same time. But out of what should be discordant, salacious, self-indulgent and ugly, von Trier, through sheer storytelling and filmmaking chutzpah, has crafted something witty and clever and thrilling, that absorbed our attention like a sponge and displayed, beneath all that brio, a kind of wisdom we haven't seen before from the filmmaker.

A strange afternoon in Berlin today. Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac Part 1” (the long version that hasn’t been seen until now) screened this morning at the Berlin Film Festival, and the press conference that followed had a few head-scratching moments. First off, Lars Von Trier himself showed up wearing a Cannes “Persona Non Grata” T-shirt (an overt reference to his banning from the French festival the year “Melancholia” played), but kept his vow to no longer speak to press by not appearing in the press conference.

Berlin 2014 preview
This Thursday, just a few scant weeks after Sundance has rolled up its red carpet, we’ll be plunging into Europe’s first major festival. The Berlin Film Festival, aka the Berlinale, has (like everything else) a lower profile than Cannes and perhaps a less glamorous aura than Venice. But, in a way, that counts toward its specific identity: with the European Film Market (which is one of the three biggest in the world) and the Talent Campus, a major program of workshops and masterclasses attended by students and professionals alike, from all disciplines, from all over the world, the Berlinale feels more businesslike and no-nonsense, less seduced by the glitz of the industry than by the actual films, and by fostering the talents that make them.

Nymphomaniac
With a surprise screening at the Sundance Film Festival, and a debut of the uncut first part at the Berlin Film Festival next month, it's safe to say Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac" is still one of the most talked about movies of the year. And here's yet another look at the movie to get you talking.

Coming on board a film is a lot like joining a family, and it's only natural that the people you're going to work with want to know a little bit you. So sure, you're going to need to send measurements to the costume department while also letting the team know what kind of donuts you want on the catering table in the morning. But we'd reckon few actors outside of the porn industry got the kind of request that Shia LaBeouf did when he signed up for "Nymphomaniac."

Nymphomaniac
"My next film, and Kirsten [Dunst] demanded it, will be porn. That's how women are. Really hard core. That's what I'm writing now," Lars Von Trier told a Cannes Film Festival press conference back in 2011. And we all had a good laugh, but here we are three years later with the director's two part epic "Nymphomaniac" is already rolling out overseas and slated to open stateside this spring. And it looks like we weren't the only ones who thought Lars was just fucking with us.

Nymphomaniac
Fifty shades of what? While Hollywood will spend the next year attempting to convince everyone just how hot their adaptation of the mommy porn book will be, Lars von Trier has gone ahead and pushed, ripped, burned and completely destroyed the kinky envelope with his two-part "Nymphomaniac." And with the movie rolling out abroad, the teasing continues as we get ready to experience the epic stateside.

Nymphomaniac Lars von Trier
The first reviews for Lars von Trier's theatrical cut of "Nymphomaniac" rolled in earlier this week, and as usual, the filmmaker has defied expectations. Yes, there is lot of flesh on screen but many of the reviews instead focused on the ideas contained therein. But still, one has to wonder about what von Trier has cooking in his 5 1/2 hour director's cut of the movie, which runs 90 minutes longer than the theatrical version and will be more sexually explicit. Well, we're about to find out.

Nymphomaniac
Subject to lots of talk, speculation and an endless amount of hype thanks to a relentless marketing campaign, Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac" has finally been seen by a select batch of critics, and the verdict? Well, the early reviews are mostly positive, with many emphasizing the intellectual ideas tossed around, rather than the hardcore sex that's also part of the package.
