Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'
With the whole theatrical cut vs. director's cut debate pretty much cleared up—the four hour cut is the "official" version (though unseen by the filmmaker) while Lars Von Trier is free to figure out how to release his 5 1/2 hour cut—it seems everyone is getting back to selling the two-part sexterpiece, and a couple new posters have landed today.

It's not a Lars Von Trier movie without some kind of controversy but this time around, it's not necessarily the content of his upcoming "Nymphomaniac" that's at issue. Rather it's the stuff that isn't going into the movie. It was about a week ago we learned that the official release of the film arriving in Denmark and Norway next month would be a four-hour cut, unseen by Von Trier that would still contain the hardcore sex he shot (as opposed to a separate softcore version that had been rumored—a concept that has since been ditched). Even more, while reports circulated that a XXX cut would play Cannes next spring, they were swiftly denied by producers. So what is the status of Lars Von Trier's five-and-a-half-hour director's cut? Well, that's up to him.

Is Lars von Trier's sex epic "Nymphomaniac" getting taken away from him, or are we in the middle of a delicate dance between commercial prospects and artistic integrity? We'd wager it's the latter rather than the former at the moment, but it would seem for the first time in his career, the provocative director is finding his voice somewhat muted. Reports circulated yesterday that Lars von Trier's reported 5 1/2-hour cut of the movie is being whittled down to 4 hours for the Danish release of the movie, and indeed it's a decision being made in the interest of financial viability.

With all the excitement over the fall festival movies, it's easy to forget that we're only a matter of months away from the unveiling of Lars Von Trier's latest. Or at least, it would be if not for the canny stream of information that comes out of "Nymphomaniac." Even if it weren't for recent revelations -- a total running time of five hours for the two-part film, a potential TV spin-off, a premiere for the hardcore version at Cannes -- Von Trier's been keeping up interest for his new film by releasing a clip every month in the run up to the Christmas premiere in Denmark of the first part.

As the monthly teasing continues for Lars Von Trier's sex odyssey "Nymphomaniac," there continues to be one surprise after the next when it comes to the film. We've already learned recently that the two-part film may run as long as five hours, and that a TV spinoff is apparently in the works. But could Von Trier's latest be his ticket back onto the Croisette after being deemed persona non grata in 2011?

"... after 268 script pages, 11 weeks of shooting and with 100 hours of material it would have been [a race] to finish the two films in time for [Cannes]," producer and CEO of Zentropa Entertainments Peter Aalbæk Jensen said earlier this year when it surfaced that Lars Von Trier's epic sexytime saga "Nymphomaniac" wouldn't be hitting the Cannes Film Festival. And indeed, with the movie gearing up for a Christmas release in Denmark, it still hasn't surfaced at any festivals, instead opting for a careful marketing plan that has seen a new teaser for the movie arrive each month. But some new tidbits about the movie have emerged and they continue to prove that there is nothing predictable about the film.

Of all the films hitting the Venice, Telluride and TIFF trifecta over the next few weeks, one of the biggest of the fall is absent: Lars Von Trier's "Nymphomaniac." It's easily the most audacious effort that's on the way, and certainly the most provocative, and it continues to tease is measured doses, with one more look arriving today to cap off the summer.
