Each year there is plenty to talk about at the Cannes Film Festival, especially considering its pedigree as the top of the heap when it comes to world premieres and highlighting the best that world cinema has to offer. But one of the most publicized incidents of the last couple of years had nothing to do with the movies themselves, but rather the unfortunate, off hand comments by a particular director. When Lars Von Trier dropped the n-bomb (Nazi) during a press conference for "Melancholia" two years ago in the guise of a malformed, provocative joke, reaction was swift.

With winter's chill still felt, the spring might seem far away, and while we will have our attention on the Berlin International Film Festival and SXSW in March, we're only a few months away from the Cannes Film Festival. Easily the most prestigious movie festival on the calendar, we'll soon start to see talk heat up about what films will -- and won't -- be making an appearance. And while Lars von Trier's hugely buzzed "Nymphomaniac" has been grabbing headlines in recent days as buyers swarm the movie in Berlin, it won't be headed to the Cannes for a premiere like many speculated. But not for the reason you're thinking of.

The limited theatrical/VOD model is more and more gaining prominence as way to take on challenging or smaller scale films and have them find an audience where a regular multiplex release might see it get buried. We've seen "Margin Call" and "Arbitrage" become success stories, not only finding viewers, but also earning awards season buzz. And Magnolia have had success with the model too, and one only has to point to their efforts with Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia," which they managed to bring to over $3 million domestically. Not bad for a tough movie about the end of the world, and it was the best effort at the North American box office for the director since "Dancer In The Dark." And it looks like they'll be getting into bed with him again.

Lars von Trier has a new movie. It's called "Nymphomanaic." And basically, if you're any sort of cinephile, that is all you need to know for this one to be way, way up on your list of anticipated films of 2013.

It's getting on two years since Lars Von Trier made headlines around the world with his ill-advised comments at the Cannes Film Festival, while promoting his film 'Melancholia," comments which saw Von Trier deemed 'persona non grata' at the festival in future. Von Trier's been relatively quiet ever since (even swearing off press altogether), but that's surely about to change, with his two-part new film "Nymphomaniac" on the way before the year is out.

So, do you have a gritty midbuget thriller that needs two bankable stars? Call up Mark Wahblerg and Denzel Washington. And that's just what Universal did for "2 Guns," the latest in a slew of movies from both actors that sees them getting a gritty wardrobe and putting on some mean mugs as they set out to take care of bizness....

You might think that Lars Von Trier's idea to shoot an erotic drama featuring hardcore sex might scare Hollywood types away. You would be wrong. With Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell and (oddly) Christian Slater among those taking part, another unexpected name has joined the cast.

Next year will bring with it Lars Von Trier's next provocative effort, "The Nymphomaniac," but lest you think it will be one you can enjoy....alone...Stellan Skarsgard puts that notion to rest. "When we call this a porno, it's meant ironically, but irony doesn't work well in print. The film is sexually explicit -- but, believe me, it will be a very, very bad wanking movie," he told THR. So while we wait for that movie to arrive, fans of the director can travel back in time a little bit.

Having given late '80s/early '90s idol-turned-TV-hero Kiefer Sutherland a plum role in his last film, "Melancholia," ever-provocative Danish auteur Lars von Trier is looking to pull the same trick again, as Variety reports that Christian Slater is the latest unlikely addition to the director's next picture(s), his two-part drama "Nymphomaniac." Slater, mostly seen in strings of dreadful DTV actioners these days, will play the father of Charlotte Gainsbourg's lead character, joining Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell and Connie Nielsen in the picture, which documents a woman's sexual life from infancy to adulthood. The trade also reveal that British model Stacy Martin will appear, playing the younger version of Gainsbourg's character.
