Just when it looked like Tom Cruise's comeback was cemented thanks to "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," the biggest hit of his career, the actor hit another dip, with neither "Rock Of Ages" or "Jack Reacher" setting the world on fire, and the latter looks increasingly unlikely to be the franchise starter that the actor and studio Paramount hoped it would be. But Cruise was ahead of the game, heading into territory he's rarely ventured into before -- hardcore science fiction -- with a pair of original sci-fi action movies coming up.

While everyone up in Park City is working their way through indie films that are about Important Things and could be potential Oscar Winners, the studio gravy train will always be franchises, sequels, tentpoles and blockbusters. So here's some reminders of where most of the money in Hollywood is spent each year.

But with the holidays over, the marketing machine is getting switched back on, and USA Today has dropped a few new images worth peering at from some movies that are hoping to be blockbuster-sized hits.

With the hope of cementing his comeback, started with "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" (we'll kindly overlook "Rock Of Ages"), and looking to be continued with "Jack Reacher," Tom Cruise is turning to a genre he's generally been a stranger to -- science-fiction. Aside from his two films with Steven Spielberg, "Minority Report" and "War Of The Worlds," Cruise has rarely delved into more fantastical territory, but he's currently filming Doug Liman's "All You Need Is Kill," and is circling another script called "Our Name Is Adam." But first up is "Oblivion," and hot on the the heels of a poster, the film's trailer has leaked online overseas.

We're going to be seeing a lot of Tom Cruise in the next five months. Of course, in a couple of weeks he hits theaters around the world as the knee-cap smashing, ex-military investigator "Jack Reacher," and then after that, he'll just do a little something known as saving Earth.

Only a few years ago, it seemed that you'd only get blockbuster releases between May and July, and clustered around Thanksgiving and Christmas (for more family oriented fare, at least). But any kind of release calendar ghettoization has long since fallen apart: March is now one of the key dates in the release calendar, and almost every month of the year sees at least one studio put out a hugely expensive blockbuster. 2013 looks to be the most unrelenting year yet, from the release of "Gangster Squad" on January 11th through to the second "The Hobbit" at the end of the year, almost every week has a giant film on release. And one of the larger gaps on the calendar seems to have been filled.

For his first feature film, Joseph Kosinski embraced the challenge set forth to him by Disney. Not only did he bring a unique visual eye to the blockbuster "Tron: Legacy" he eschewed a traditional score for a set of brand new compositions from Daft Punk, a pairing that proved to be a stroke of inspiration. Now gearing up his next effort, the sci-fi tale "Oblivion," Kosinski has once again chosen another exciting act to help tell his tale.

Tom Cruise is going to be spending the bulk of 2012 working on two sci-fi projects, and he's adding some interesting co-stars as both "Oblivion" and "All You Need Is Kill" gear up.

Well, if his buddies James Cameron and George Lucas are doing it, why not Steven Spielberg? It's an easy cash grab, nerds will eat it up thought they'll pretend to complain about it, and the studio doesn't really have to do anything except spend some coin on conversion and some cursory marketing. And hell, Universal is so confident about this movie, they're giving it a prime real estate summer release date.

'Game Of Thrones' Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Joins Tom Cruise In Sci-Fi 'Oblivion,' Presumably Won't Push A Child Out A Window

Even if it wasn't one of the best new TV series of 2011 (perhaps beat only by "Homeland"), "Game of Thrones" would have been manna from heaven for casting directors: a cast of attractive young stars, who get to show their action and acting chops, pre-picked by one of the best in the business Nina Gold, who have half the year free, and given the show's body count, will likely be free in a year or two anyway. Since the first season debuted on HBO last year, its stars have cropped up consistently in casting announcements, from Kit Harington landing the lead in the since-canceled "Arthur and Lancelot" (ahead of co-star Richard Madden), Emilia Clarke in "Spike Island" and "Overdrive" and Alfie Allen in "Confine" to Lena Headey in "Dredd" and Sean Bean in "Pan."
