It's strange how intermittently bestselling novelist Dean Koontz has been adapted, and how those adaptations—from the early Ben Affleck joint "Phantoms" to the Jeff Goldblum starring psychological thriller "Hideaway"—have been almost uniformly horrible. Koontz doesn't have the way with characters or the homespun prose of his contemporary Stephen King, but he sells almost as many books. And most are written in a singularly straightforward, cinematic style that should make big screen adaptations easy and accessible (his late '90s techno-thriller "Dark Rivers of the Heart" was the best movie James Cameron never made). So calling "Odd Thomas" the best Dean Koontz adaptation yet feels like damning it with faint praise, but it's true. Too bad it's barely getting released. Koontz's string of bad luck continues.

Wayyy back in the antediluvian days of July, we brought word that Stephen Sommers' Dean Koontz adaptation “Odd Thomas,” starring Anton Yelchin, Addison Timlin, Willem Dafoe and Patton Oswalt, was being delayed, perhaps indefinitely. It seemed like a shame, because it looked like a nifty little supernatural flick, featuring Yelchin as a fry cook with certain paranormal powers who gets mixed up in something spooky in a Southwestern town. We knew the film existed, but it looked like it was maybe angling for a place on our list of movies that were shot but never released.

Over the course of his three decade career, Willem Dafoe has been a difficult actor to pinpoint, both as an indie darling, and equally at home in big budget fair like “Spider-Man” and this year’s Disney tentpole, “John Carter.” Dafoe portrays Martian Tars Tarkas in the latter, a long-awaited adaptation of the influential Edgar Rice Burroughs tales first penned in the late 1800s.

Willem Dafoe is a man of eclectic taste, vacillating between decidedly arthouse fare like "Antichrist" and "The Dust Of Time," low rent fare like "Mr. Bean's Holiday" and "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" and straight up tentpole movies such as "Spiderman" and the upcoming "John Carter Of Mars." He follows his muse wherever it goes really, and it looks like it has a taste for the supernatural.

The trouble with the new transparency of the casting process -- the stories that break at every stage of the process, from wishlist, to shortlist, to meetings, to screen-tests, to offers, to negotiations, to signing on -- is that you can sometimes think that an actor's firmly on board on a project based on one of these stories. More often than not, offer-stories lead to an actor actually being in the film, so when we reported a few weeks back that Lily Collins, rising star of "The Blind Side," had been offered the female lead in "Odd Thomas," the adaptation of Dean Koontz's mystery series about a short-order cook who can communicate with the dead, from "The Mummy" director Stephen Sommers, we'd filed it away, assuming that the offer was a formality, and that Collins would end up on the marquee for the picture, alongside Anton Yelchin, who's playing the title role.
