Demographics matter. You want to say, well, screw the numbers, let’s just make a movie for everyone! But considering the multiple sources of entertainment in our multimedia worlds, whatever doesn’t automatically turn us on will turn us off. Because of this, Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” turned people off. It was an action fantasia, a genre normally attractive to teenage boys, but it featured only girls, an immediate turnoff for that demographic. And it didn’t appeal to women, who noticed the marketing campaign centered around cacophonous violence and mayhem, not usually a drawing point for females. It wasn’t made for kids, but the heavily-CGI’d special effects made it look like a candy-coated kids’ entertainment to adults. Four quadrants, all disinterested.

Happy Oscar weekend! This Sunday brings the apex of Hollywood's season, rewarding those 2010 films we've been talking about for so long. Who will wear what? What upsets will we be rooting for? Will James Franco perform some kind of bizarre performance art stunt as part of his hosting duties (all signs point to YES). We will be live blogging the events of Sunday evening, so check back in for the rockin'est Oscar commentary your computer has seen. In the meantime, get your highbrow on and rent those remaining DVDs of the Oscar contenders you missed. If you've seen them all or just don't feel like sitting through ye olde Oscar bait, some delightfully lowbrow releases await you at the theater. 2011 Cage's Festival of Wigs continues with the awesomely awesome looking "Drive Angry 3D," and "Hall Pass" brings us our weekly dose of gross sex humor! Down the hatch! There are also a few small arthouse releases, such as the latest from 22-year-old (!!!!!!!) filmmaker Xavier Dolan.

While it got some early buzz at Cannes last year and ended up being the official French entry for the forthcoming Oscars (it didn't make the cut), that's pretty much where the admiration ended for Xavier Beauvois’ religious drama "Of Gods and Men." At least on his side of the ocean.
