Oldboy
With Park Chan-wook's entire vengeance trilogy getting remade (“Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” just nabbed a helmer, while "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" starring Charlize Theron continues to develop), Spike Lee's stab at "Oldboy" will be first at the gate, and likely the most scrutinized. The original is beloved in many quarters, with fans openly wondering how this Hollywood take will deal with some of the darker corners of the South Korean version.

2013 Fall Film Preview, Her, American Hustle, Counselor
With this week feeling, release-wise, a little like the industry at large is taking a deep breath while effecting the gear change from Summer tentpole scheduling to awards season programming, it’s a good moment to pause and take a look at the goodies to come in the waning months of 2013. It’s a pretty stellar lineup, as films we've seen throughout the festival year start to make their way into awards-friendly end-of-year slots, vying with films we haven't yet seen but have been patiently, and in some cases pantingly, looking forward to for months now. In fact the lineup is so stellar that for the purposes of whittling down a manageable list of the films we're most anticipating, we made the decision to exclude anything that features in our Most Anticipated Toronto Internatioal Film Festival list just to narrow the field a little.

And while the verdict is still out as to whether or not an American studio version of the bonkers original can even land in the same ballpark, it's safe to say that Lee isn't holding back in the slightest.

Oldboy
As Spike Lee keeps one eye on his Kickstarter campaign, which is now days away from ending and inching its way toward its $1.25 million goal, the director is also rounding third on "Oldboy," his remake of Park Chan-wook's cult favorite. There are still lots of questions yet to be answered about this—primarily, how are they going to handle that ending?—but we remain curious to see the final result.

As the summer tentpole season starts wrapping up, one of the films we’re most curious to see in the latter half of the year is Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake. While the red-band trailer released last month seemed to alleviate some fears, the fact still remains that Park Chan-Wook’s 2005 film is arguably one of the few classic films released in the 21st century so far. It seems that Lee’s leading man Josh Brolin was so nervous about following in the Korean film’s footsteps that he sat down with the lauded South Korean filmmaker to ask for permission.

There's only ever one way a remake of Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy" was ever going to even a have a chance of approaching an original -- embracing the fact the story requires a hard-R to get told right. Now the question is: does it work?

For every movie poster, there are usually a half dozen discarded ideas that we never see. But sometimes, those outcast ideas aren't so bad. Movie marketing is usually a dryly straightforward process, and generally, studios prefer a direct and clear (and usually boring) approach over anything creative, enigmatic or that might possibly make an audience have to think. That being said, the first teaser poster for Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake was both direct and mysterious, with folks familiar with the original knowing exactly what it was referencing, while newcomers were left to puzzle it out. But in a different world, the following posters could have been our first impression of the film.

To remake or not to remake, that is the question. And in general, it's not something we're big fans of. But Spike Lee taking on Park Chan-Wook's "Oldboy? Yeah, we'll roll the dice on that.
