That's funny. We were just chatting around The Playlist water color about who might take the lead role in Spike Lee's adaptation of "Oldboy" and while our immediate thought was that this might go out to some of the hot young thesps around town (i.e. Michael Fassbender) we were quickly reminded that the movie is called "Oldboy" for a reason -- it deals with a man who is suddenly freed after being being held captive in a hotel room for fifteen years (and there are some other elements that we won't spoil for those who haven't seen the film that also skew to an older actor). Well, just as we were pulling together our list of possible candidates Twitch reports that none other than Josh Brolin is topping Mandate Pictures' wish list of actors to take on the lead role in the film.

It's been one helluva day for Spike Lee news. In case you missed it this morning, word hit that the writer/director was reprising his role as Mookie from "Do The Right Thing" in a new, totally under the radar project called "Red Hook Summer." But it looks like the big, blockbuster project Lee was linked to last week is now official.

All in all, Spike Lee is one of our favorite working filmmakers, and really, how could the man behind "She's Gotta Have It," "Do The Right Thing," "Malcolm X" and "25th Hour" not be? But he's also extremely inconsistent, and the critical and commercial failure of his last picture, the WW2 drama "Miracle At St. Anna," have made things trickier for the director: over the weekend, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn't been able to get financing for any of his films in three years, even a sequel to his biggest hit, the starry thriller "Inside Man."

Remember when late last year, fanboys everywhere danced on the grave of the gestating remake of Park Chan-Wook's "Oldboy" that had Steven Spielberg and Will Smith attached? Looks like those celebrations might have been premature.
