So far in our On The Rise series this year, we've looked at talent on the ascension in front of the camera, with a cluster of actors and actresses who look set for great things. We've also highlighted promising cinematographers, writers and composers who've already proven their worth, and look like they're about to be more and more in demand as time goes on.

Screenwriters historically get a rough ride in Hollywood. If a film works, they're normally skipped over when it's time to hand out the credit; if it doesn't they're the first to be blamed. They're rewritten, fired, replaced, rehired, fired again, underpaid, made to do free drafts, generally abused, and disrespected. And then the star takes the credit for the best lines anyway. And yet, no movie that you love would exist without a screenwriter to come up with the damn thing in the first place; they're the most consistently and perplexingly undervalued part of the process.

It's a pretty exciting time to watch the current crop of leading men emerge. Names like Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy are some of the most interesting actors to follow these days, each them choose to work with great talent and take on fascinating roles. Their stars are still in ascendance, but they've certainly proved a breath of fresh air to the movies in the last few years.

Last week, we kicked off our annual On The Rise season with a look at 5 cinematographers who you'll be seeing a lot more of in the coming years. This week, we wanted to switch lanes a bit, away from the eyes, and towards the ears, to pick out some promising new composers on the scene.

Between the Oscar nominations, Sundance, leftover films from the previous year going into wide release, and the lack of anything good to see otherwise in theaters, January can always feel a bit stop-start in the movie world. But now that the month's coming to a close, we can start taking the long-term view of the year ahead, and in particular the new talent to come.

Following our looks at actors, actresses, screenwriters and directors to watch in recent months, when the time came to put together a list of cinematographers (as we did two years ago), we went in with an open mind. But what was interesting is realizing, after the fact, that in an era where 35mm film is allegedly being phased out, that all five have done perhaps their most distinctive work on old-fashioned celluloid, rather than digital.

With cinematic releases at the moment mostly involving the not-particularly inspiring likes of "That's My Boy" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," it's hard not to look to television for a little nourishment. The trouble is that the TV season has wrapped up for the year. While a few shows (namely "Girls") are still wrapping up, and others get underway shortly ("The Newsroom," "Breaking Bad," "Louie"), it's pretty quiet on the box, with cast and creatives focusing on making a hiatus movie, campaigning for Emmy, or just getting some sleep for once.

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.

Unlike in theater or television, writers generally get the short end of the stick in the movie business. When a film doesn't work, the script is blamed, when it does work, the director gets credit. Writers get fired, rehired, fired again, rewritten and screwed out of credit. But that's not to say that once they get the momentum behind them, a screenwriter can't become just as talked about as actors, actresses and directors around Hollywood watering holes and meeting rooms.
