While the debate will continue to swirl about how 5' 7" Tom Cruise will portray the much taller, bulkier Jack Reacher as described in the books by Lee Child remains to be seen, from day one Paramount has viewed "One Shot" as the start of a potential series of films. And now with a swift title change, it makes a bit easier.

It's not exactly shocking that once "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" stormed out of the gate at the box office last winter, confirming that Tom Cruise had his box office mojo back and was in full form, that Paramount wanted to stay in business with the actor. It wasn't long before word came out that the studio was already contemplating not only another adventure for Ethan Hunt, but one for Maverick as well in the shape of the long-developing "Top Gun 2." But considering 'Ghost Protocol' is the best entry in the series so far, both critically and commerically, we figured that would be the one to go first. Not so fast.

Release dates are pretty crucial to a film's success. Put your prize tentpole up against another film aiming for the same audience, and you'll cannibalize each other. Place your movie on exactly the right place in the calendar, and you'll find yourselves with a licence to print money. And that's why studios will claim release slots, and continue to tinker with them, both years in advance, and with only months to spare.

Plus Rosamund Pike Talks Her Approach To The CharacterFor a film that, when first announced, enraged fans of the franchise, and seemed like a firmly skippable programmer to the rest of us, "One Shot" is going quite some way towards winning people round. The creation of writer Lee Child, Jack Reacher is a mountain of a man, an ex-military policeman-turned-drifter who's starred in fifteen novels with a fervent fanbase, and the news that Tom Cruise would play the character in a film directed by "The Usual Suspects" writer Christopher McQuarrie upset many.

Richard Jenkins is awesome, and that's pretty much all you need to know. The longstanding character actor pretty much classes up the joint and becomes the best thing to watch when he's slumming it in stuff like "Hall Pass" or "Eat Pray Love," but give him material like "Let Me In" or "The Visitor" and he'll show you what he can do. But despite nearly 100 credits to his name there are two things Jenkins hasn't really done before: a Tom Cruise movie or a potential franchise. Well, that's all about to change.

'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Star David Oyelowo In Talks To Join Tom Cruise In 'One Shot'

British actor David Oyelowo has been edging towards proper stardom gently in the last few years. The Royal Shakespeare Company veteran became well known in the U.K. after starring in the spy series "Spooks" (or "M-I:5" in the U.S.) and 2006's "The Last King of Scotland," and has worked steadily in big film projects. Last year, he looked to be properly on the brink when he landed the key part of Martin Luther King Jr. in Lee Daniels' "Selma." And while that film is yet to happen, he's had a pretty great 2011 regardless, with prominent roles in two late summer blockbusters as Preacher Green in "The Help" and the villainous Steven Jacobs in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."
