After one of the most unprecditable Oscar seasons in memory, we're less than two weeks out, and things are finally starting to look more like an anointment than a contest; Ben Affleck's "Argo," counted out by many after the director missed out on an Oscar nomination, has won the top prizes from the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild, all reliable Oscar precursors, as well as the Best Drama prize from the Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards, on top of many other critics' prizes.

After dropping the ball musically at last year’s ceremony – how the hell do you nominate "The Muppets" and then not let them perform their song? – it looks like this year’s Oscar ceremony isn’t going to ignore the Best Original Song category. In fact, far from it. The Academy already have Adele performing her Oscar-nominated “Skyfall” theme at the ceremony, and now they’ve confirmed that Norah Jones will also appear to perform “Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from “Ted”. We’re assuming this means that all the nominated songs will be performed live this year, which hopefully means that Hugh Jackman will get up on stage to perform “Suddenly” from "Les Miserables." We’d also be shocked if the ceremony’s host Seth MacFarlane doesn’t get himself involved in Norah Jones’ performance of the song that he penned too.

We're now less than a month until Oscar night, and the next few weeks will feature a steady drip of guild awards and other precursors, leading up to big shindig on February 24th. And the crystal ball is staring to get a bit more clear on who will walk away with some statues on Oscar night.

It's been a good year for the James Bond franchise. Celebrating fifty years, the series has never seemed more vibrant, with "Skyfall" becoming a billion dollar earner and the biggest 007 entry of all time. That feat hasn't been ignored by the Academy, with the movie picking up five (below-the-line) nominations and the franchise to be honored via a tribute segment as part of the telecast next month. But there's even more to get shaken not stirred about.

Well, this is kind of obvious, but if anything, it's another reminder that Oscar host Seth MacFarlane was behind one of the biggest comedy hits of 2012. That's right, the director of "Ted" is gearing up to bring his offbeat brand of comedy to a primetime cable event, and to help out is the little creature that helped push his directorial debut to over $500 million.

We're starting to come to the close of Oscar nominations day, and we don't know about you, but we're regretting our decision to give up drinking for January; it's a day full of hysteria, overreaction, and inexplicable anger, and it's pretty tiring, especially for those who have to get up at 4.30 in the morning to cover it (luckily, not ourselves).

The announcement of the Academy Award nominations are many things, but rarely are they dull. Every time it looks like the precursors are pointing to a predictable line-up, the Academy find a way to throw a spanner in the works, and skip over those who seemed like sure-fire locks, while nominating those who might have otherwise been overlooked by prognosticators and predictors.

So here we are. The moment that basically every film fan (even if some are openly hostile to the idea) sees as their Superbowl; the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, for the 85th time, in this case. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took to the stage at 5.30 PST to deliver the news, after months of the usual feverish speculation. So how did things turn out?

Each year, filmmakers and studios race toward an end-of-December deadline, not only to get their Oscar-contending films into theaters to qualify, but to ensure Academy voters are able to see them in time to vote. But in 2014, a move to shift the broadcast of the ceremony from February to January could have massive repercussions.
