Christian Bale and Casey Affleck teaming up for "Out Of The Furnace," the long-awaited sophomore effort from "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper, is pretty much all the reason we needed to place it on our Most Anticipated Of 2013 list. But the gritty Rust Belt tale about two brothers who become ensnared in a violent crime ring, now has another texture to add to the drama its cooking up.

Two of the finest scores of 2011 belonged to one man: Alberto Iglesias. The composer who frequently works with Pedro Almodovar didn't get an Oscar nomination for his work on "The Skin I Live In" (though he should have), but did get the nod for his equally impressive work on "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." And now his talents have been enlisted for another high profile film, and one that is quite different than those two pictures.

Talk about having an impressive ensemble. “Crazy Heart” helmer Scott Cooper has already lined up a remarkable array of players for "Out of the Furnace," his first directorial effort since his breakout hit landed actor Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar. The Black List-approved script is set in Indiana in 1986 and follows Slim (Christian Bale), recently released from prison, who intends to marry his girlfriend (Zoe Saldana) but instead is drawn into a quest for revenge when his brother (Casey Affleck) is murdered after getting involved in the gambling racket. This supposedly “No Country For Old Men”-like picture also has Sam Shepard, Woody Harrelson and Forest Whitaker, and has now added one more exceptional thespian to the mix.

Update: Relativity Media sent out an press release today. Forest Whitaker has officially joined the cast. No word on Billy Bob Thornton and with production imminent, our guess is his deal never came together.

Well, here's a face we'd be happier to see more of: Casey Affleck. After directing the underrated faux doc/media stunt "I'm Still Here" Affleck (along with his bud/hip hop star Joaquin Phoenix) kinda dropped off the face of the planet. He was linked to a couple projects here and there that never quite got off the ground, and last fall was kind of totally wasted as part of the ensemble of "Tower Heist." Later this year, he lends voice to the animated "ParaNorman" but this next project looks like it could be the first real gig for the actor in a while.

For a moment there it seemed like "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper would just continually keep signing on to a bunch of stuff without ever shooting anything. Indeed, since country music movie became a big, Academy Award winning hit Cooper has put his name to plethora of projects including (take a deep breath): the western family feud saga "The Hatfields And The McCoys" with Brad Pitt attached; an adaptation of William Styron's "Lie Down In Darkness" with Jennifer Lawrence attached; an adaptation of Bob Dylan's "Brownsville Girl" also with Brad Pitt attached; a remake of the Argentinian thriller "Carancho"; former Noah Baumbach project "The Emperor's Children" and the conman tale "The Man In Rockefeller Suit." But it's a gig he took last summer that has now firmly take the pole position with a major star on board.
