Pacific Rim
The narrative for Guillermo del Toro’s monsters vs. robots spectacle “Pacific Rim” this summer was quite the roller coaster. Budgeted at over $200 million (not including marketing), the studio started to sweat when bad tracking reports hit a few weeks before release. Del Toro had to galvanize his base, spread the word and do everything he can to beat the awareness drum. And he did. While some were worried the movie would bomb, the story, as usual, was more complex.

Unless you're The Asylum with “Atlantic Rim,” the task of realizing monsters battling aliens is an enormously pricy one, and with Guillermo Del Toro's $190 million effort “Pacific Rim” gathering only close to $90 million domestic thus far, it may not be one worth pursuing again for Warner Bros. But as we saw last week, overseas audiences turned out in droves to see the flick, reigniting talks of a possible sequel once more, and now a small tidbit from actor Charlie Day has hinted as to its possible direction.

Coming on three weeks in release, Guillermo Del Toro's big, and very expensive ($190 million) monster/robot movie spectacular "Pacific Rim" has pulled in a rather average $86 million. For a blockbuster like this, right in the heart of the summer movie season, that's the kind of number you aim for on opening weekend. Needless to say, much has been written about the successful or failure of the film, all the while the prospect of a sequel — with reports of development first arriving last year —looms in the background. But it looks like China could be a deciding factor as to whether or not Warner Bros. gets the gang back together.

It's Monday morning, and the victor between "Pacific Rim" and "Grown Ups 2" has been determined....and it's "Despicable Me 2." Yes, in the great showdown that was set to take place this weekend between Guillermo Del Toro's monsters and Adam Sandler's farts, it was the minions who wound up winning. That being said, a third place finish likely wasn't what Warner Bros. was hoping for with their $190 million movie (though it did brisk business overseas) and it'll interesting to see if this turns into the franchise everyone involved was hoping for or not. The next couple of weeks will determine that, but until then, Del Toro has teased what might appear in part two, and brace yourself for some technical nerd talk.

Pacific Rim
As the summer movie season chugs along with its endless procession of superhero movies, bawdy comedies and animated extravaganzas, "Pacific Rim," a brand new sci-fi property from director Guillermo del Toro, increasingly looks like it will be one of the bright spots on the schedule – it's a go-for-broke epic about giant monsters that crawl out of the Pacific Ocean and the human-piloted giant robots that are called upon to fight them. (You know, the kind of story we can all relate to.) Well, today we've got a brand new TV spot for the monster mash, along with del Toro spilling details about what we can expect from the sequel, if this one turns out to be a graveyard smash.

Well, the viral campaign has started, the first trailer should be dropping later this month, and even it's not due until next summer, in the movie world that doesn't matter as developmenet on "Pacific Rim 2" is already under way. It was just a few weeks ago that the first rumblings of a followup surfaced, and now it's confirmed that work is starting.

There’s been a trend as of late of directors attaching themselves to more projects than they can conceivably handle, and Guillermo del Toro is the poster boy of this epidemic. While next year’s “Pacific Rim” will be his first directorial outing in nearly five years, it hasn’t been for lack of trying (of course you'll remember he was long attached to helm "The Hobbit" but bailed as it continued to stall due to MGM's financial woes). The “Hellboy” helmer is now talking up two more projects that he intends to tackle in the future.
