In a summer with a fair few dicey bets, "Pacific Rim" might be one of the riskier ones. While the "Transformers' comparisons are easy, this is an original concept, with some heady sci-fi ideas at work, and a distinct lack of big names (the film's led by "Sons of Anarchy" lead Charlie Hunnam, "Babel"'s Rinko Kikuchi and "Horrible Bosses"' "Charlie Day, leaving Idris Elba arguably the most familiar face involved. And while he's beloved by the geek crowd, director Guillermo Del Toro has never been a big commercial name.

Landing on our list of The Most Anticipated Blockbusters Of The 2013 Summer Season, "Pacific Rim" had been playing a bit cagey until this point, keeping the monsters mostly teased instead of shown, but today Warner Bros. has unleashed a helluva trailer which promises the monster vs. robot mayhem most have been hoping Guillermo Del Toro would be delivering.

Ah, summer. That time of year marked by long days, short skirts, and the application of sunscreen. It’s the season where even the most hardened cineaste can put aside their Criterion Collection discs, if only for a moment, and get excited about the jazzy, visual effects-driven blockbusters coming down the pike. The line between “summer” and “any other time of the year,” in terms of movies, keeps getting blurrier and blurrier, with big-budget studio fare like “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “Oblivion” coming out in the spring (we had a Michael Bay movie open in April, for crying out loud – before this it was questionable whether or not he even existed outside of June or July).

As you may know, this week is CinemaCon, where studios dangle shiny things in front of theater owners to soothe them, and confirm that everyone will make piles of money with the blockbusters they have on the way. Directors and stars come out with great enthusiasm, show off footage, and everyone oohs and aaahs and dreams with dollar signs in their heads. But it seems that even heading into his fourth movie, Michael Bay is a bit protective/insecure about his "Transformers" series, throwing some shade on the other robot movies out there.

"What's the most resilient parasite? An idea." Little did Christopher Nolan know when he wrote that line, he’d need to add an addendum: an idea that keeps getting pickpocketed over and over again until it loses meaning and ownership, and becomes simply background noise to the general cultural conversation. It's appropriate, when you think about it, and something that Cobb (and team Nolan) would likely appreciate, that the memory of this ubiquitous sound's origins are slowly fading away. The Hans Zimmer-composed ominous pitched-down “Inception” horn blast, known as “The 'Inception' BRAAAM" (number of 'r's and 'a's may vary) has been resilient indeed, an idea homaged, appropriated and straight-up nicked time and time again since its... wait for it... inception.

Many years from now, when humanity is but a memory and earth is ruled by monkeys, anthropologists will uncover a treasure trove of movie poster one-sheets, and conclude that movies in the early 21st century consisted mostly of people watching a character's back while they look at something cool. From "The Dark Knight Rises" to "Battleship" to "Star Trek Into Darkness," the latest trend in one-sheet design is to avoid a character's face entirely. Whether it's inspired by third-person video games, or just by everyone copying Batman, it seems every other blockbuster is going down this route when it comes to the marketing, and the latest to get in on the act is "Ender's Game."

2013 has claimed its first would-be-blockbuster casualty. This past weekend saw "Jack The Giant Slayer," Bryan Singer's long-delayed $200 million fairy tale movie, open to a decidedly underwhelming $28 million, putting it on the path to losing "John Carter"/"Battleship"/"Total Recall"-style sums of money. It was hardly a surprise (most people with half a brain saw this coming months ago), but it's another illustration that for every expensive film that proves to be a hit, there's at least one that fails entirely to connect with the audience that it needs.

While every other studio seems to be dropping some mad billz for Super Bowl spots, Warner Bros. are politely sitting on the sidelines today. So, sorry, you won't be seeing anything for "Man Of Steel," "The Great Gatsby," "The Hangover Part III" or "Pacific Rim." But as a small concession of sorts, they've dropped some new images for the latter.

This weekend the new horror film "Mama" opens in theaters nationwide. It's the spooky tale of a pair of young girls who are abandoned in a cabin in the woods for several years. When they are finally discovered and returned to society, to live with their kindly uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from "Game Of Thrones") and his punkish girlfriend (Jessica Chastain), something else comes along with them… a spectral figure the girls name "Mama." In other words: perfect material for producer Guillermo del Toro to shepherd to the big screen.

It's been helluva day for Guillermo Del Toro fans. The director kicked off his Monday talking to journalists about his upcoming "Mama," the horror film he produced starring Jessica Chastain, and of course, the chatty director shared all kinds of tidbits not related to that film at all. With The Playlist he revealed that he was approached for "Star Wars: Episode 7," which he turned down, and that he was planning another studio pitch for "At The Mountains Of Madness." And then he closed things off by walking on stage this evening at CES during mobile company Qualcomm's opening presentation, to help show off the new trailer for "Pacific Rim" which is powered by their processor or something.
