Let's face it, at the end the day, chatter about tracking, marketing, audience expectations and more is just that...chatter. Until "Pacific Rim" opens next week, and until those first reviews come out, we wont' really know if this was a bad decision on the part of financiers, a movie that deserved a better push or Guillermo Del Toro's blockbuster homerun (who knows, it could be). But either way, Warner Bros. is going big to make sure you buy a ticket.

Alright, so the narrative is set forth: Guillermo del Toro's latest ambitious sci-fi spectacle "Pacific Rim" is evidently tracking poorly (audiences apparently would rather see "Growns Ups 2" that weekend) and it's either going to be a big expensive flop or fans (and the marketing) will rally and it's going to be one of summer's biggest hits. So the question remains: which one is it? Well, Legendary Pictures -- who have a 75% stake in the movie -- have been so unhappy with their Warner Bros. partners (who are invested in that other 25%), have a lot to lose this as they are parting ways with the studio when their contract comes to an end this year. Known for "The Man Of Steel," "The Dark Knight Rises," "300," "The Hangover" franchise and more, the Legendary/WB partnership has been a lucrative one, but clearly the production company hasn't been very happy with Warners lately (the writing was on the wall since February of this year).

Pacific Rim Blue Jasmine Only God Forgives The Hunt
It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the summer, but no worries because July has fireworks, hot dogs, and movies! June was a soft month with staid comedies like “The Internship” and divisive blockbusters such as “Man of Steel” and “World War Z.” But, the next thirty days or so should have more than enough for you whether your appetite is for explosions or more subtler fare with a bit more substance.

With only two weeks to go till the July 12th release date of “Pacific Rim,” fans have begun to speculate just how well the big monster brawler will do at the box office. As recent reports have revealed, tracking has suggested that “Pacific Rim” may succumb to the Adam Sandler sequel “Grown Ups 2,” which opens the same weekend. It’s certainly dire news for fans of kaijus and robots, but Guillermo Del Toro isn’t taking the speculation sitting down.

The common rallying cry around the movies -- that tends to get louder on weekends when box office takes dip -- is that audiences want more originality and less sequels. They want something new and fresh, instead of another reboot, remake, sequel or spinoff. They want a new dish instead of last year's leftovers, but is that really the case? In 2013, the top 5 grossing movies of the year so far are a sequel ("Iron Man 3"), spinoff ("Oz The Great And Powerful"), sequel ("Fast & Furious 6"), sequel ("Star Trek Into Darkness") and reboot ("Man Of Steel"). And the top 10 is rounded out by two more sequels ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "The Hangover Part III"). And if early numbers and trends are anything to go by, one of the big original tentpoles of the summer could be in trouble.

We’re a couple of weeks away from the release of "Pacific Rim" and the marketing blitz, as always, has gone into overdrive. Not based on any preexisting property and a cast devoid of household names, the Guillermo del Toro-helmed tentpole is an expensive gamble that Warner Bros. is hoping pays off. And right now, the signs aren't good with Variety reporting that tracking right now is "disappointing," and indicating that "Grown Ups 2" will beat it on opening weekend. Ouch. So, a new extended TV spot and a batch of new images have dropped online to try and get you into the theater.

Pacific Rim
Is "Pacific Rim" going to be the loudest movie of the summer? The advertising is certainly the most jacked up of any movie so far this year (and yeah, that includes "Man Of Steel") with enough smashing, explosions and dubstep bass drops for three movies. And the marketing is continuing full throttle.

Get To Know Your 2013 Apocalypse Movies
Hollywood likes to second-guess itself and look over its shoulder. “Oh, you’re producing a film about a math wizard who falls in love and takes a trip around the world in a balloon?” [Turns head, whispers in teeth to assistant] “Where’s our version of this? Get a draft on my desk by next Thursday.” This year we’ll see two White House movies (“White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen”) going toe-to-toe and a number of superhero film face-offs. But with apocalypse movies, it’s almost something else entirely. It seems to have captured the creative zeitgeist, and/or everyone is just creatively bankrupt. In Hollywood, it’s always hard to tell.

"There was something weird about me from the beginning. I don't know exactly when I started loving monsters so much, but it was definitely early. When I was 4 or 5 years old, I would ask my mother, 'Can I sleep in the coffin tonight?' and I would lie down in a drawer or I would sleep in a toy box,” Guillermo Del Toro recently shared with Empire. “There's even a recording of me, aged three or four, asking for a mandrake root, for Christmas, to use in magic rituals." So yeah, needless to say, GDT has been dreaming of monsters his whole life. And "Pacific Rim" is certainly the biggest effort of his career, and a few more sneak peeks have arrived for the movie.
