Palo Alto
On the page, "Palo Alto" seems like the most James Franco of James Franco projects. It's a coming-of-age tale based on a book of short stories by Franco, adapted for the big screen by Gia Coppola (of course), with Franco taking a role in the movie too (obviously). But put those assumptions aside, because the final product is a "strong and soulful" one, and a worthy entry into the teen movie genre. So what was that process like bringing the page to life in front of the camera?

Palo Alto
Cinema's just about old enough at this point that we've seen a few three-generation acting dynasties—the Fondas, the Hustons, the Barrymores. But if there's a family that's produced three generations of directors, they're certainly escaping us right now. But enter Gia Coppola. The 26-year-old is, as you might imagine from the surname, the granddaughter of "The Godfather" helmer Francis Ford Coppola, which makes her the niece of his director children Sofia and Roman (Gia's father, Gian-Carlo, was Francis' eldest, killed in a boat accident in 1986 not long after her conception).

Palo Alto
The teenage experience is both universal and distinct, and channeling that specific feeling and make it feel authentic, and free of cliché is no easy feat. And Gia Coppola — yes, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola — went down that tricky path for her debut feature film "Palo Alto," and the good news is she got it. Our review out of Venice called the film "strong and soulful," and today we have a little look at "Palo Alto" to take you into the world Coppola has put on screen.

Palo Alto
The name Coppola carries with it some weight, not just because of the legacy already attached to Francis Ford Coppola, but also the oeuvre carved out by Sofia Coppola. But now Gia Coppola (Francis' granddaughter) is getting in the family way with "Palo Alto," her debut feature film and a new trailer is here as it gears up to hit theaters.
