If you don't know the story of the West Memphis Three, a trio of men who were wrongly convicted of murdering three young children, back when the defendants were still teenagers, it's one of the most compelling true crime tales in recent memory. And thankfully, documentarians Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky have been there for the whole ordeal, completing three riveting documentaries on the subject called "Paradise Lost," the last of which, "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory," captured the sort-of happy ending for the three convicts. The movies have just been compiled into a deluxe DVD box set which hit stores earlier this month, and now we can bring you an exclusive clip from the set.

Few movies have a conclusion as out-of-nowhere, compelling and yet strange as the one featured in "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory." What makes this finale even more exceptional is the fact that the film is a documentary and that this unexpected coda wasn't dreamed up inside the head of an imaginative screenwriter, but a surprise twist that occurred in these dramatic real life events.

Every year, it seems the documentary branch of the Academy goes out of their way to embarass themselves, and this year is no exception. When the shortlist for the Oscar nominees landed back in November, it was arguably more notable for what was left off the list than what was included. A number of high profile, well reviewed films -- Errol Morris' "Tabloid," "Being Elmo: A Pupeteer's Journey," Werner Hezog's "Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life," "Page One: Inside the New York Times," "Senna" -- didn't make the cut, but luckily the DGA have righted some of those wrongs.

Sometime over the past year it was revealed that Peter Jackson, the talented, Oscar-winning director behind the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy (and, more recently, the more morose "Lovely Bones"), had been a quiet, but very involved supporter of the West Memphis Three.

...and then there were 15. Just like that, the field for the films battling for the five slots at the Oscars for Best Documentary just got a lot smaller. The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the shortlist for the award and once again, there is no love for Werner Herzog.

Documentary Filmmakers Of The 'Paradise Lost' Movies Talk The Challenges Of Making Films About Wrongly Convicted MenIt’s not easy to distill the story of the West Memphis Three and the three “Paradise Lost” documentaries (though reading our review of “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory” might provide some pretty good context).
