When was the last time you were excited about a Brian De Palma film? Was it during the last decade? Well, his latest, the sexy, psychological thriller “Passion” starring Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams, might get your pulse racing in another way. It’s a remake of Alain Corneau’s posthumously released 2010 film “Love Crime” (which starred Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott Thomas) in which a young businesswoman plots revenge after being ritually humiliated and threatened and having her ideas stolen by her boss and mentor.

TIFF remains one of the biggest distribution markets in the world, and with the festival now over, some distributors are walking away with some big prizes. Focus Features took "The Place Beyond The Pines," Lionsgate and/or Roadside Attractions bought a wealth of pictures, including "Imogene," "Thanks For Sharing" and "Stories We Tell," Anchor Bay landed Rob Zombie's "The Lords Of Salem," IFC Films grabbed "Frances Ha" Magnolia won "The Brass Teapot" Dimension picked up "Aftershock," and Sony Pictures Classics took "Wadjda," and these are just a few of the deals that went down at the festival.

Like the waves that lap the beach by the Palazzo del Cinema in Venice, Brian De Palma is reassuringly steadfast. Over the years his Movie Brat brethren Scorsese and Spielberg have adapted their respective styles to align with evolving audience tastes and advancing technology, embracing 3D and motion capture with their most recent works. Meanwhile, Terrence Malick, the other New Hollywood veteran competing for this year’s Golden Lion, experiments in increasingly radical filmmaking syntax with each passing movie. But De Palma is dogged: he continues to explore themes and techniques that have obsessed him since his ‘70s/’80s salad days of “Carrie” and “Body Double."

While this writer offended some by daring to suggest the first trailer for Brian De Palma's "Passion" maybe wasn't so hot, the bottom line is, put Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace together in a movie and have them square off, and we'll be there. Directed by Brian De Palma? Doubly so. "Passion" is certainly one of the more intriguing offerings on the fest circuit this fall, and now a few more images have dropped to tempt you.

With the fall film festival season now off and running and Venice underway, we've already packed our bags and adjusted our calendars to fit as many movies as we can. However, in the case of the Telluride Film Festival, we and all the other attendees don't know what's playing until the day of. Yep, that's right, Telluride won't unveil their slate until August 31st, so curious moviegoers will have to live by the luck of the draw.

Superhero movies be damned, festival season is underway. Indeed, by the time you read this, this writer will be winging his way to (hopefully) sunny Italy to spend ten days or so resolutely avoiding getting anything like a tan at the 69th Venice Film Festival. The first under the new leadership of Alberto Barbera, it's lived up to his promise of being a less glitzy, more sober take, with no major studio fare to be found, and a line up that emphasizes international auteurs over the American and British filmmakers who dominated line-ups in previous years.
