After a few stalled efforts and possible projects that didn't quite get moving, Brian De Palma's "Passion" is going full steam ahead, and it looks like it could be his starriest outing since "The Black Dahlia." The film, a loose remake of Alain Corneau's "Love Crime," already has Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace slotted as the dueling leads, and now two more excellent actors are coming aboard.

Brian De Palma, whether you love him or hate him, always has a knack for choosing composers. Whether its the twinkly, sexy romanticism of Pino Donaggio in "Blow Out," "Body Double," and "Dressed to Kill;" the brooding eroticism of Bernard Herrmann in "Sisters" and "Obsession;" or the more off-kilter experimentalism of Ryuichi Sakamoto in "Snake Eyes," "Mission to Mars," and "Femme Fatale"; De Palma knows how to match the musician with the material, almost seamlessly. Even his big budget Hollywood job, "Mission: Impossible," which had a last minute replacement score cooked up by Danny Elfman, remains one of that composer's greatest, least heralded efforts. And that knack seems to have continued, with Film Music Reporter noting that the filmmaker has brought on Dario Marianelli, of "Atonement" and "Jane Eyre" fame, for his latest project, an erotic thriller called "Passion."

For Brian De Palma fanatics, it's been an agonizingly long wait for another sexy, stylish spellbinder. His last feature was 2007 incendiary "Redacted," which was a noble failure, but a failure just the same. Honestly, we can only watch our Criterion "Blow Out" Blu-rays so many times. Thankfully, word comes down from Anne Thompson that his new movie, "Passion," a loose remake of the recent French thriller "Love Crime," has picked up a cast member and set a date for principle photography.

It's been quite a while since we've had a film from Brian De Palma. His last effort was the poorly received Iraq war drama "Redacted" and while last year it seemed like things were in motion for him to film his long-gestating psychological thriller "Toyer" in the fall, it looks like the project never quite got off the ground. But it seems he's got another film on the horizon.
