Ah, the Griswolds. From the spate of '80s comedies, no family is more memorable than the clan headed up by Chevy Chase in four films that saw them heading to Europe, Vegas and spending the holidays together in their uniquely dysfunctional way. The franchise has been quiet ever since the 1997 entry "Vegas Vacation" but early in 2010 it kicked back to life. It was reported that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley -- whose Black List script "Horrible Bosses" is now in theaters -- were tapped to write a reboot, produced by David Dobkin ("Wedding Crashers," "The Change-Up") that would focus on Rusty Griswold (played by Anthony Michael Hall, Johnny Galecki and Ethan Embry in the three different franchise films) with vibe said to be more in the vein of "Planes, Trains And Automobiles" than its predecessors. Well, development has been ongoing on the first name of a potential director has leaked out and...its pretty uninspired.

Plus Helmer Talks Upcoming Jon Hamm/Melissa McCarthy ComedyAlmost everyone involved in "Bridesmaids" has gotten a major boost from its huge success (although, note we said almost everyone: more on this later on), and none more deservingly though than its director, Paul Feig. Since co-creating classic one-season wonder "Freaks and Geeks" with Judd Apatow over a decade ago, Feig has worked consistently on some of the best TV shows around, including "The Office," "Arrested Development" and even "Mad Men," but big-screen success had so far eluded him, with features "I Am David" and "Grounded" landing with a thud.

With "Bridesmaids" a bonafide runaway success -- $126 million and counting -- it didn't take long for Universal to re-up with director Paul Feig and producer Judd Apatow signing the pair a new film that has so far been described simply as "an unconventional love story." But it looks like it's a project that Feig has been hinting out throughout the spring.

Well, that didn't take too long. With "Bridesmaids" proving to be a critical smash and a huge box office surprise, crossing $100 million this past weekend in domestic ticket sales, Universal has re-upped their relationship with the film's director Paul Feig and producer Judd Apatow.

After a tough few years, 2011 has turned out pretty well for Universal so far: "Fast Five" is currently the top-grosser of the year, fairly impressive considering its the fifth entry in a franchise, with "Hop" not far behind, and even "Paul" and "The Adjustment Bureau" did better than expectations. On top of all that, there's "Bridesmaids," not only a film that's one of our collective favorites of the year, but also a genuine word-of-mouth hit, taking a minimal drop in its second week, and steaming towards at least $100 million.

Plus 'Bridemaids' Writer Annie Mumolo & McCarthy Sell Comedy Pitch To ParamountEarlier this week, The Playlist's Drew Taylor spoke to director Paul Feig about this weekend's raunchy and funny R-Rated wedding-themed comedy "Bridemaids" (which looks like it's on track to be a $21 million opening weekend hit). While Feig was amiable and forthcoming, he would only tease two of the new projects he was working on and wouldn't really give details. One sounded like a bigger studio project that depended on actors' upcoming availability and the other was another Judd Apatow-produced project that could star members from the "Bridemaids" cast.

We did it. We made it to May 13th. And now anyone with a nearby megaplex can head out and see the long awaited "Bridesmaids," because this hilarious, heartfelt opening to the summer comedy season is totally worth those hard earned Andrew Jacksons. With a solid cast of some of the funniest voices in comedy from both sides of the gender line (that's right ladies, Tim Heidecker makes an appearance), anyone with a sense of humor will find something to love about this movie.

While much of the conversation surrounding Friday's genuinely brilliant "Bridesmaids" focuses around its superstar producer, Judd Apatow. And while Apatow had a guiding hand, with the film initially sprung from a development deal the producer struck with co-writer/star Kristen Wiig after her scene-stealing turn in the Apatow-directed "Knocked Up," the man behind the camera is none other than Paul Feig. Feig created "Freaks and Geeks" and has been responsible for a number of memorable television episodes in recent years, helming installments of everything from "Arrested Development" and "Bored to Death" to "30 Rock" and "Mad Men." (He's also directed more than a dozen episodes of the stateside "The Office," including the recent departure of Steve Carell.)

Directed by Paul Feig ("Freaks & Geeks"), starring underrated "Saturday Night Live" MVP and perpetual film scene stealer Kristen Wiig, and produced by Judd Apatow, "Bridesmaids" rolls into theaters this weekend and obviously boasts a trifecta of excellent pedigree behind it. Our love for the film is unabashed and collective; every Playlist member who has seen the film has been head over heels for it, a rare confluence of consensus for our opinionated group (read our review here, the film also made our list of 7 Best Films we saw at SXSW 2010).
