Paul Schrader Says Lars von Trier/Martin Scorsese 'Taxi Driver' Project Won't Happen, Is A "Terrible Idea"

Around the same time he announced to the world his intention to make “Nymphomaniac” — following Nazi-comment-gate — rumors began to spread that Lars Von Trier had also challenged Martin Scorsese to remake “Taxi Driver” in the style of Von Trier’s 2003 doc, “The Five Obstructions.” While the project seemed like a wild fantasy, Von Trier’s producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen said the two lauded filmmakers were indeed having a dialogue about the experiment but now cruel reality has dashed our hopes again.

Well, according to director/writer Paul Schrader (“The Canyons”) and filmmaker/cinematographer Andrew Wonder (@andrewwonder) cinema is in turmoil. “Only today, it’s in a crisis of form, not content,” Schrader says in the short film he and Wonder directed called “Paul Schrader, Future of Cinema.”

Paul Schrader, one-time Hollywood screenwriting wunderkind, is back in the news with his new film “The Canyons” (read our review). Back when Martin Scorsese was a a bright young thing sticking it to the studios — this would be in the late '70s — Schrader was the man feeding him the material, writing “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” but with the '80s Schrader turned to directing, with varying success. From “American Gigolo” to “Cat People” to "Hardcore" to "Auto Focus" all the way to “The Canyons”...it's been an interesting journey (check out our full retrospective of his directorial efforts).

With the screenplays for Sydney Pollack’s “The Yakuza” (1975), Brian De Palma’s “Obsession” (1976), John Flynn’s “Rolling Thunder,” Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” (1976) and “Raging Bull” (1980) under his belt, Paul Schrader's legacy as a seminal figure in 1970s American screenwriting was unassailably assured. Yet not only did he go on to write "The Mosquito Coast" and Scorsese's "The Last Temptation Of Christ," he has also enjoyed a long, diverse career as a director, with his most recent foray being released last week: the controversial, chatter-worthy "The Canyons" (you can read our review here).

While "The Canyons" continues to evoke a wide range of reactions from critics (read our review here), it has certainly put Paul Schrader right back on the map. His next movie is already brewing, "The Dying Of The Light" starring Nicolas Cage, he's pitched Spike Lee on a Clarence Thomas biopic, and now it looks like he's ready to head to TV as well.

Hey-o cinephiles, and welcome to the deluxe edition of Stream This. There was a lot to cover this week, with so many films being released on VOD concurrently or in advance of their theatrical debuts, and we didn't want to leave anything out, including those nifty themed picks. Thus, the result at hand: an extra-long version of the column, where we give you eight suggestions instead of six. (Don't worry, you won't have to buy special sheets or anything.) There's work from Brian De Palma, Paul Schrader, and Lynn Shelton to name a few, and all of it is either playing or will be playing shortly on a silver screen near you. In related news, James Ponsoldt's third film, "The Spectacular Now," opens this weekend to much critical praise from Sundance on down, so if you're looking to brush up on his canon, an earlier work is available to stream. Plus there's a largely forgotten Mark Wahlberg picture from the early 2000s to honor the "2 Guns" star while reminding us why we like artist formerly known as Marky Mark so damn much. A crowd-sourced project, from an acclaimed writer/director, with a script from one of literature's enfant terribles, and a cast led by a tabloid headlining actress and an adult film star, perhaps the buzz, press and hype around "The Canyons" was to be expected. But surely no one predicted a journey that saw a devastating behind-the-scenes piece from the New York Times, highly publicized "rejections" from Sundance and SXSW and more. But standing solidly at the centre of the storm and never wavering was helmer Paul Schrader, whose career has known no shortage of controversy. Throughout the entire pre-production, filming, post-production and publicity for the film, he has remained transparent about what happened on set, and more importantly, proud of the film he put together. And why not?

Director Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons” opens up with images of what appears to be a post-apocalyptic world for cinema. Cameras glide over ghost towns of dilapidated, dying and dead movie theaters, backed by a haunted and menacing electro score. The suggestion implied is that cinema is coming to an end. Though what that has to do with vapid Angelinos in a sexual jealousy drama that transforms into an erotic thriller is anyone’s guess, apart from the filmmaker’s overt nod at his own attempts to subvert the production and distribution paradigm of movies (“The Canyons” was financed by crowdsourcing instead of traditional studio funding means). While the film is about decaying, deadened people who peripherally work in the world of movies, the connections still seem rather tenuous. What does the death of cinema have to do with these characters? Not a whole lot in the end (or in the beginning or middle), and that’s perhaps the first sign that “The Canyons” is on uneven territory from the start.
