Who knows what to expect with Bret Easton Ellis and Paul Schrader's "The Canyons" starring porn star James Deen and Lindsay Lohan. With the film now in the midst of production, they've pulled out another surprise with writer-director Gus Van Sant now evidently joining as an actor in a supporting role. Announced by Ellis on Twitter and on the "The Canyons" Facebook page, Van Sant will play the psychiatrist of the protagonist played by Deen.

Nice move, Bret Easton Ellis and Paul Schrader, you've definitely got people's attention now. "American Psycho" scribe Ellis has revealed on Twitter that their upcoming L.A. erotic thriller, "The Canyons," will now star Lindsay Lohan alongside porn star James Deen, who was an early pick by Ellis.

As Paul Schrader's indie "The Canyons" continues to develop and prepare to roll in front of cameras this summer, the filmmaker and the team behind the film have taken a very active and involved online approach in making the movie. A casting call for the lead roles went out online, and earlier this month a Kickstart initiative was put in place for the last leg of financing for the film, and it has already exceeded the $100,000 goal with flying colors. Back in January, word cropped up that screenwriter/author Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader were cooking up a microbudget film together, an L.A. based noir. Ellis provocatively teased that the male lead "has to act and be full frontal naked banging girls and guys realistically" and he suggested porn star James Deen for one of the lead roles. Well, the Ellis has provided another update about the movie, tweeting today: "Shooting begins July 9th in Los Angeles..."
