So, just like that, Mondo has decided to curate a series of new posters for the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. While it doesn't seem to be tied into any particular event, perhaps any time is a good time to dip into the filmmaker's catalog. If you have a film nerd in your family about to graduate, this could be a nice present to give them.

With "Punch Drunk Love," Paul Thomas Anderson managed to find the dark, vulnerable core at the center of Adam Sandler's schtick and turn into something memorable, compelling and unique. Can he do the same for Owen Wilson's shaggy, goofy, lovable, slacker/surfer vibe?

Paul Thomas Anderson's latest, "Inherent Vice" is a major gear shift for the director of the much more opaque and sinister "The Master" and "There Will Be Blood." The filmmaker's talked about making a pure comedy for quite some time, and while we wonder if it'll ever happen (PTA's sensibilities thankfully being a little too askew), perhaps this adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's idler gumshoe novel will be the closest he gets for some time. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, "Inherent Vice" reads something like Raymond Chandler meets the Venice Beach slacker stereotype of that era mixed in with just a smidgen of "Cheech & Chong." The novel, like the film, follows an inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello (played by Joaquin Phoenix) as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl, who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends. It's very much “The Big Sleep” meets Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye" (another Chandler adaptation) and it should be interesting to see PTA take a more loose and languid approach to this hazy age of cannabis and low-gear layabouts (and yes, it's "The Big Lebowski"-esque on the surface, but it's also its own beast).

The road to Paul Thomas Anderson's next picture, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice," has been interesting. All through the press run for "The Master," the filmmaker insisted it would go into production this year, and indeed, last we heard, his longtime producer JoAnn Sellar said the aim was to start shooting at the end of the April or in early May. And it looks like everyone involved is hitting that target right on the nose.

Direct influences have always factored heavily in Paul Thomas Anderson's work: the Robert Altman tag has dogged him until recently, while Upton Sinclair's “Oil!” and “Treasure of the Sierra Madre” provided the main groundwork for “There Will Be Blood.” Before that 2007 film though, the director's 1997 “Boogie Nights” drew on a documentary about porn star John Holmes, which -- thanks to some extensive legwork -- has found its way back online for a second viewing.

While going down on Michelle Williams and the impressive structure of Michael Fassbender's dong made the MPAA all hot and NC-17 bothered about "Blue Valentine" and "Shame," it seems they are totally cool with handjobs. "Hyde Park On Hudson," "The Sessions" and "On The Road" all feature people getting stroked off (a car seems to be a popular place) and even Paul Thomas Anderson's cryptic wonder "The Master" takes a moment to squeeze one out. But think we're cool about it? In Japan, it ain't no thing.

As you probably know by now, we've been following every twist and turn of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" from its initial development, collapse at Universal and resurrection into the film that was released last year. And just as much has been written about what was left out of the movie as what was left in. But now, you can see for yourself the material that was left behind.

Okay, so "The Master" may end up losing money for Harvey Weinstein and Megan Ellison, but it did earn it's fair share of acclaim, and three Oscar nominations for its lead trio of Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams is nothing sneeze at either. And while one can sit around and talk about why or why not the film didn't catch on the way "There Will Be Blood" did, Paul Thomas Anderson is already moving with "Inherent Vice," reteaming with Phoenix after Robert Downey Jr. passed. And though fans have patiently awaited longer and longer gaps between PTA films, it looks like his next is gearing up very quickly.
