More like a Rorschach-like free-association test where Freddie Quell (played by Joaquin Phoenix) gives off his impressions of ink blots and reveals his strange and idiosyncratic character. It's another exclusive (and somewhat NSFW) clip from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Cut especially for Alamo Drafthouse by PTA himself, the clip announces a special sneak preview at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin, Texas on Monday, 9/10.

At times it seemed like it would never happen, but "The Master" is almost (finally) here. Paul Thomas Anderson's long-in-the-works pseudo-Scientology story, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joquain Phoenix, is set to hit theaters in limited release on September 14th (following a string of secret screenings and an official world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and an appearance at TIFF). In anticipation of the film's release, the usually cagey Anderson is on the press circuit, and in a lengthy and fascinating interview with the Village Voice, talks about how he single handedly created the marketing for the movie and what it was like working with the sometimes controversial Harvey Weinstein.

With "The Master" making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend, we can now start obsessing over Paul Thomas Anderson's next movie, right? Indeed, given his patient output and increasing space between films (it has been five years each between "Punch-Drunk Love" and "There Will Be Blood," and "There Will Be Blood" and "The Master") it can be a tough wait for fans of the director's work, but the good news is he's already at work on what will hopefully be his next project.

Since it was first announced back in 2009, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest has been one of the most highly anticipated films over the past few years among cinephiles. For two years, production on the project that would come to be known as "The Master" was shrouded in secrecy. In fact, Anderson who hasn't made a film since 2007's "There Will Be Blood," didn't speak a single word about the project publicly until just weeks ago. And cast/crew were also told to keep mum on details. But the veil has finally been lifted this as "The Master" had its official debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

No movie has been more keenly anticipated by cinephiles in 2012 than Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master.” The filmmaker has been one of cinema’s most exciting new voices for a decade and a half now, but reached a new level of adulation with his last picture, ”There Will Be Blood,” which won awards and topped critical lists the world over five years ago. As such, the genesis and production of “The Master” was avidly followed, not least because the film was long ago said to revolve around a fictionalized surrogate of L. Ron Hubbard and his ever-controversial Scientology, and because Anderson had shot the film on 70mm film, the first major production to do so since Kenneth Branagh’s “Hamlet” in 1996.

While for most prestigious movies, audiences have to wait until after their high-falutin' red carpet festival premieres before they can see it for themselves, with "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson is changing the game. The film had its first surprise public screening Santa Monica at the beginning of the month, had a last minute fundraising showing in Chicago last week (see our review here), and over the weekend, had two more unannounced unveilings in New York City. But even so, the curtain has been somewhat closed on the movie from the filmmaker himself, but in his first interview about the film, Paul Thomas Anderson shares his inspirations and frustrations about getting the movie out there.

Even amongst its most wrenching scenes of unfettered anger and broken loyalty, a volatile sensuality nonetheless invades every frame of Paul Thomas Anderson’s arresting “The Master.” Populated by characters certain in their sexual and loving instincts yet stubborn in claiming responsibility for them, the film holds an unseen, persuasive force just off-screen to keep each on edge, never fully comfortable in their own skin. However, while the film’s narrative may point to faith as a cause and cure, the end result focuses instead on the reverberating pain in one’s past, and the oblique, often-maddening ways it manifests in the present through incredible performances and direction.

"It's not the L. Ron Hubbard story," Philip Seymour Hoffman told Entertainment Weekly in last week's issue. "[Scientology] was one of the bigger movements at the time, but there were a lot of movements at that time. There's nothing about how I'm behaving or talking that echoes [Hubbard]." And while the bigger thematic arc of the film is beginning to show its colors, it seems pretty clear to us that Joaquin Phoenix is being audited in this new clip from the film.

Another new deluge of photos from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" has arrived. Directed by Anderson and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams, the picture is one of the most anticipated films left in the year. Said to be a riff on L. Ron Hubbard and the nascent beginnings of Scientology, the early screenplay, trailer and several materials from the film don't do much to counter this idea. But the creative team still insist they're weaving a different tale.
