Paul Thomas Anderson might be one of the most lauded and devoutly-followed filmmakers working today, but he's hardly been Mr. Prolific of late; three films in the last decade in "Punch Drunk Love," "There Will Be Blood," and this year's "The Master," each one made five years apart. But with the latter long since in theaters (some calling it the best movie of 2012, others expressing disappointment), Anderson's looking to the future, and suggesting that we might have a shorter wait for his next movie.

Unlike Best Picture, the Best Director category at the Academy Awards is still only made up of five slots, and it's tough to crack in there, especially as nominees are usually aligned with the Best Picture nominees. More than almost any other category, the merits of a film's direction can sometimes be overlooked in favor of the helmer of the best-liked film, rather than the one who did the most surprising, boldest and impressive work of the year.

The press and publicity tour for a movie can be a grind for anybody, as actors and directors must remain fresh and upbeat, even as they must answer the same, usually mundane questions from every outlet on the planet. But again, talent are usually more than champs and good sports, and are gracious and patient even if it means answering "How did you get involved with this project" for the 29th time. But sometimes, enough is enough.

Probably the oddest nugget of auteur/comedy movie trivia to come along since it was revealed that Terrence Malick is a "Zoolander" fan, "The Master" helmer Paul Thomas Anderson reveals he's partial to a bawdy good romp from time to time. And hell, maybe one day he'll just get out there and make is own R-rated filth fest.

Even if "The Master" isn't quite the breakout hit that "There Will Be Blood" was, it is undeniably one of the most talked about movies of the year. Paul Thomas Anderson's film continues to spur discussions and debates, and conversations are nothing less than passionate. The picture is one whose enigmas last long after the viewing is over, encouraging and demanding a second or third viewing, and luckily for fans, there will be even more to dive into on the forthcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of the film.

If there has been one constant in the career of Paul Thomas Anderson, it has been a desire to dive into completely different worlds with each picture. From the early days of the oil trade in "There Will Be Blood," to the sprawling city of Los Angeles in "Magnolia" to the intimate inside of a cult in "The Master," his curiosity runs deep, but it was the '70s porn sets of "Boogie Nights" that first landed the filmmaker on the map. The 1997 film continues to be a favorite in the filmmaker's oeuvre for many, and while he will probably never make a sequel, he feels that most of those characters probably didn't survive the decade.

Earlier in the week, Universal got their Academy Awards campaign moving by launching their For Your Consideration site, which included uploading a selection of screenplays for their major movies online. Some feel optimistic at best ("The Lorax," "Snow White and the Huntsman," "Ted"), some are a little more viable ("This Is 40," "Les Misérables"). But fresh off reading the Judd Apatow script (which is kind of terrific, and has the potential to be the director's best film yet), and having covered the acting categories in previous weeks, we thought we'd turn our eye to the screenplay races.
