From “Starship Troopers” to “Showgirls,” director Paul Verhoeven has always enjoyed mystifying audiences with his satirical intentions, but with his newest film “Tricked” (which screened recently at Tribeca), he let the viewers contribute to the end result. Featuring a crowd-sourced script from over 600 submissions worldwide, it shows Verhoeven at his most collaborative, and as such, he's spoken up about the broken creative process in Hollywood today.

One of the most enjoyable half hours we spent during the Rome Film Festival was in conversation with director Paul Verhoeven. The filmmaker behind a large number of everyone's favorite popcorn movies from the late '80s/early '90s ("RoboCop," "Total Recall," Basic Instinct," "Starship Troopers") is experiencing something of a resurgence of late, with various films of his getting the subpar-remake treatment, which often has the unintended consequence of making us realize all over again just how much we loved the originals.

While it's six years since we had a new feature film from Paul Verhoeven, the great Dutch director is still wielding his influence over Hollywood, even if only as a source of material. This past summer, Verhoeven's 1990 actioner "Total Recall" received the big-budget remake treatment, just as a redo of his 1987 breakthrough "Robocop" went into production, helmed by Jose Padilha, while at the same time, it was announced that his 1997 "Starship Troopers" was being eyed for another version by the producers of 2012's "Total Recall," one more "patriotic" and less "violent" than the original.

Even though Rome Film Festival head Marco Mueller had been promising two surprise additions to his line-up -- strongly hinting toward Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" being one of them -- we're not sure any of these latest additions qualify as left field shockers. But for cinema buffs, they do promise an interesting time as they gear up for a week long run or so of movies.

"Starship Troopers" just might have been Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece. The Dutch helmer has several films that might run it close; "Flesh & Blood," "Soldier Of Orange," "Black Book" and his Hollywood debut "Robocop." But it's his epic, slyly satirical adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's sci-fi novel about the war on a bug-like alien race that we keep coming back to rewatch and rewatch, and feels like the culmination of everything he worked towards across his career. Which is why of all the remakes circulating out there, the one we're most puzzled by is "Starship Troopers."

Biblical movies are all the rage in Hollywood right now, with Darren Aronofsky currently casting his "Noah" for a summer shoot,  Ridley Scott looking to tackle Moses for Fox while Steven Spielberg also has a Moses movie brewing for Warner Bros. Meanwhile, "Robocop" and "Showgirls" director Paul Verhoeven wants in on the Biblical epic movement too, specifically with the controversial take on Jesus Christ that he's been trying to get off the ground since last year. And Verhoeven has taken a couple significant steps forward with his Jesus movie with Muse Productions’ Chris Hanley stepping up to finance the project and screenwriter Roger Avary ("Beowulf," "Killing Zoe") hired to write the screenplay.

Over the past little while he's been attached to a handful of projects, including the Islam and psychic powers film "The Hidden Force"; the video game adaptation "The Last Express"; the "Fatal Attraction"-esque ghost story thriller "Eternal," but most recently, he's been trying to get a rather intriguing film off the ground.
