SXSW 2014 line-up
It’s always a tough act to follow-up the Sundance Film Festival each year when it comes to the world of independent cinema, but the SXSW Film Festival generally does a good job of mixing the high and low, the populist with the brainy, and the docs with the midnight madness section. Generally a more relaxed festival aiming for a good time, the Austin-based fiesta has already announced some of its heavy hitting premieres—the “Veronica Mars” movie and Jon Favreau’s “Chef”—and now they’ve unveiled their main line-up.

20 Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2014
Somehow, we're still getting think pieces on whether or not the movies are superior from TV, presumably from writers who haven't yet worked out that you're allowed to watch both. Penny Dreadful Eva Green
As many thinkpieces and industry veterans have no doubt told you, the small screen—both on actual television and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon—is where the future of mature and thoughtful storytelling lies. Naturally, many filmmakers have migrated over from the big screen world and that trend continues into the next year with filmmakers like Cary Fukunaga and Sam Mendes.

12 Show Hoping To Be The Next 'Breaking Bad'
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone. The one who knocks knocks no more. We won't give away what went down in Sunday's series finale of "Breaking Bad," partly because we don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't yet seen it and partly because we wrote this before it aired, but we know that we're not spoiling anything to say that there's no more of Vince Gilligan's praised-to-the-skies cult hit coming down the pipeline. The show's two-part fifth season has long been planned to be the last, and Walter White's story is well and truly all wrapped up.

Even throughout its preposterous narrative and wildly fluctuating tone, HBO's “True Blood” has nonetheless still garnered a consistent audience every week. Now in its sixth season, the erotic melodrama has laid down the working template that premium channels aspire to create, and with the Sam Mendes-produced series, “Penny Dreadful,” Showtime believes it has a prime contender, and also two newly-cast leads to front the enterprise.

Last year, before the film even opened in North America, Sam Mendes and John Logan, the director and writer of “Skyfall,” began developing a vampire-hunting TV series set in the 1800s. The pair pitched the series to various cable networks, and the show has now found a home at Showtime.
