Review: 'Perfect Sense' An Uneven Mix Of Romance & Apocalypse

If you thought the fast spreading virus in "Contagion" was bad, Steven Soderbergh's film has got nothing on David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense." A romance, sci-fi tale and apocalyptic vision of the breakdown of humanity all rolled into one, there is no source for the virus which moves quicky and mysteriously around the world. It just happens, and the effects are devastating. Anyone stricken with the virus begins to lose each of their senses, one by one over the course of days and weeks. There is no cure and there is no way to stop it, and it's against this backdrop that romance, against all odds, begins to flourish.

Happy Friday all, and welcome to February. It finally feels like a normal release weekend, now that we are out of the January no-mans-land. Funny how that self-fulfilling prophecy works out. Or, how studios strictly adhere to the "January movie" policy. Anyway, onwards and upwards my pets. We've got to get to the teen found footage movies, and the heartwarming whale tales, and the haunted house flicks, and the lone awards-contender dregs. Go go gadget In Theaters!

What would happen if we not only lost our ability to communicate with the world around us, but with the people in our life, in the most basic, fundamental way? That's the question at the heart of David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense." Starring Eva Green and Ewan McGregor, the story follows the promising new relationship between two young lovers, just as a virus is sweeping the Earth, one that causes those infected to lose their senses gradually, one at at time. And as that ability to interact with the world and one another diminshes, the methods that remain to communicate become all the more vital and important.

Ewan McGregor has been in an upswing of late. Shaking off the creative stagnation of the 'Star Wars' prequels, he's been back doing solid work recently in movies like "The Ghost Writer" and this year's "Beginners" (we should also mention that he also totally kills it in Soderbergh's "Haywire," out next year). We're not sure if his next film, the sci-fi-y romance "Perfect Sense," will be part of this creative resurgence, but the just-released trailer does look intriguing.

Can Ewan McGregor string together strong back-to-back performances after Mike Mills' "Beginners"? Can he match the heartfelt chemistry he shared with Melanie Laurent in Mills' film with another much-loved Gallic thespian in Eva Green? And will David MacKenzie's fusion of a love story and a disaster pic work at all? All questions we're currently asking of "Perfect Sense," the latest effort from the Scottish helmer who broke out with another McGregor-starrer "Young Adam" back in 2003.

We briefly touched on the name change earlier this year but it looks like David MacKenzie's sci-fi-tinged romancer starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green now has the confirmed title of "Perfect Sense" as it approaches its premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, (whose website also provides this first official look).
